Too seen it. I don't think this is the best movie I've seen this year. I KNOW that. Holy motherfucking Christ balls of heaven. This is one of the best movies of the 21st Century, easily up there w/Inception, Whiplash, 12 Years and Fury Road as my favorite live action films this decade. Best war movie since Saving Private Ryan is an understatement. Mel Gibson, you sir, regardless of the kind of person you are, proved your worth as an absolute A-class director.

Andrew Garfield is utterly incredible, Teresa, Weaving and Vaughn all do great jobs too, the character of Desmond Doss is unbelievably likeable, the war scenes are some fucked up shit like only Gibson could conjure up but still juxtaposition themselves brilliantly next to Doss' pacifist beliefs and bravery to save the men in peril, the pacing is excellent.... wow. Just wow. This edged out Zootopia as the best movie of the year for me, hands down.

It has been SO LONG since I saw an audience applaud so rapturously at the end of a movie as much as this at my showing yesterday. I won't be shocked if it sees a slight uptick on Veteran's Day weekend.

Man I'm so bummed, people never applaud at my theater. wish I would have maybe it would have gotten the rest of the audience to.

So yea I never really talked about this movie in this thread but I freaking loved it. Certainly in the top 5 of the year for me, and I'm thinking of moving it up a spot or two a day after seeing it... it also sits really well with me.

The set up is honestly just as gripping (in a different sort of way) than the action itself. While the action is probably some of the best I've seen all year (and maybe some of the best battles depicted in war films period) I think the set up for this movie (basically everything in the first half of the trailer) is expected smoothly but also with real heart. The film flows nicely, and the performances keep the entire thing grounded. You feel like you're being pulled into the movie with each scene; it's an extremely well structured movie and it shows in the development of the scenes.

So yea I loved it. Go see it if you haven't, you'd be missing out on some great stuff.

oh and @Kalo the applause my showing had for this movie is probably second only to some of the standing ovations TFA had in its first week packed with die hard fans.

Saw it last night. Amazing movie. 20 years ago, this movie would hover around the $15mm mark for several weeks and easily crack the $100mm mark. But movies don't really work that way anymore and it will start to lose theaters after next week and probably finish around $60-70mm. I hope I'm wrong and it catches on.

I'm really interested in seeing yesterday's actuals. I saw it at 6:45 last night and it was packed. Very unusual for the theater I go to.

I dont think I have seen the movie twice this year except for Deadpool. That will change with this one. I was completely blown away by it and I think I'm going to try to see it again either tonight or tomorrow night.

Yeah, there was an applause a big one after TFA, at my theater, but that crowd was crazy (well I was one of the crazies).

Since I don't live in the US, I have no idea, but:

Can Veterans Day push the numbers for Hacksaw Ridge?

It seems like the perfect day to watch this movie...

It'll definitely provide some sort of huge boost. Last year's:

Granted it was on a Wednesday. This year 11/11 falls on a Friday, and Hacksaw Ridge is perfect. I certainly think/hope it gets an increase.

Yeah with it falling on Friday it's harder to quantify the benefit. However Thursday showing may be fuller due to no work / school the next day. I would think a solid to spectacular hold (say under -20%) would really show proof of both WOM and the Friday Holiday effect.

Matter of Fact the last time this calendar configuration fell (2011) that is exactly what happened Thursday saw substantial increases and Friday then appeared "normal" (in context to the previous Friday and the Friday after.) Now obviously 5 years is long enough for some patterns to change and we now have to contend with Thursday preview shows - but a good increase instead of flat or down is what I would be looking for.
