Mel Gibson and Andrew Garfield are in talks to team up for a World War II drama.

Gibson is slated to direct Hacksaw Ridge, the true story of war hero Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor even though he refused to bear arms on religious grounds.

Garfield would play Doss, if a deal comes to fruition.

Doss was drafted in 1942 but refused to kill or carry a weapon. He became a medic in the Pacific theater but was ostracized for his beliefs by other soldiers. However, refusing to be cowed, Doss made himself a legend when he saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa. He helped evacuate the wounded near enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers on the field, and in one overnight battle, was wounded by a grenade and later hit by a sniper while saving grunts. Doss also received two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts.

Mel Gibson’s next directorial, Hacksaw Ridge from Lionsgate, will open on Nov. 4.

Deadline hears that the film tested through the roof and the best place for this title which has equal parts drama, action and faith-based nuances is right in the heart of the awards fall season.  Ali Jaafar originally broke the news about Gibson’s movie back in November 2014.

Hacksaw Ridge stars Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss, who was the first conscientious objector in U.S. history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. Doss was a U.S. Army medic who served in World War II during the Battle of Okinawa and refused to kill. President Truman awarded him the Medal of Honor for saving so many lives.

The pic produced by Bill Mechanic, David Permut, Brian Oliver, Tyler Thompson, Bruce Davey, and Paul Currie stars also stars
Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, Vince Vaughn.

Sounds interesting for sure. A movie about a military hero with faith based overtones may appeal a lot to the same demo from American Sniper and Lone Survivor. Especially since the Military and its funding will be a hot button issue at that time with the presidential election just 4 days away.
