MEH-MORIAL DAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE | Abandon all hope, the box office is dead. 3 day weekend #s X-Men 65M, Alice 28.1M, Angry Birds 18.7M, Civil War 15.1M, Neighbors 9.1M. Bad openings, horrible holdovers.

Pretty good preview numbers in the end.

If the sellout counts I did are accurate, Alice's previews will almost flat out suck.

To be fair, sellout data is pretty. meaningless for films that aren't performing extraordinarily well. Sellouts won't exist in any real fashion until a movie is pushing 100M+.

True, but Alice 2 was not selling out a theater which pretty much sells out for literally every single movie. It has great seating and limited seats, so movies are sold out through the weekend there. Alice wasn't even 30% sold for any show there yesterday.

Based on the luke warm reception and typical sequel frontloadedness any guesses what the DOM total will be with a 90 m 4-day?

I'll give it a 2 multiplier and 180m. Last Stand, DOFP, and Origins all had multipliers between 1.9-2.1. (That's using the 4-day for the former two)

All from 7pm on

2015-05-22 Tomorrowland /Friday 0.73 / 710 theaters / 9.7 OD / 42.7 (4 DAY)

2015-03-13  Cinderella /Friday 2.3 / 23 OD/ 67.9 (3 Day)

2014-05-30  Maleficent / Friday 4.2 /24.3 OD; / 69.4 (3 Day)

Tomorrowland was IMAX only previews from 7pm and PLF previews from midnight. It won't be a good comparison at all regardless of what Alice 2 does.

Differences in preview start times really only matter in situations of incredibly high demand, IMO.

If the difference is 7pm or 8pm I'd agree. But going from 10pm to 7pm makes a big difference to anyone that has a day job.

Do you think mid-80s for 4-day?

DOFP did -17.5%, -11%, -24% on Sat, Sun, Mon. That had great wom though.

Guessing high-80s.

23.20 -20
20.42 -12

I think maleficent will be the best comp.

If it comes in at 2-2.2m, looking at 35-40m 3 day

LOL I was walking to chem class and passed this smaller group of girls (grade 9 I think) sitting at their lockers and they were like

"have you seen the fifth wave?"

"Ohmygod I love that movie! Did you see mortal instruments?"

"who do you think I am of course I have!"
