I don't think it's a direct prequel to the 1971 film but it's using elements from that film. 

 

I'm surprised Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator has never been adapted although it's a very weird book.

The book has a very thin plot. Not nearly as good as "CHocolate Factory" Factory is so full of colorfule charecters it is easy to adapt; "Elevator" is alot more challenging.

This is sort of a prelude to the full scale flood of Candy and other food items tied in with the movie we will get this winter. but i tthe New Wonka instead of Wilder.

I have changed my mind about this; it does look interesting from the trailers.And IMHO the "Let's just forget the Burton Version" was the right way to go.

I still think Warners is taking a unnecessary risk by opening this so close to Aquaman 2. just moving it back a week to Dec 7th would give it some breathing space, and sitll get the Holiday audiences.

This will clean up at Christmas. I know I should put nothing past the sociopathic  greedy CEO's willing to drag this strike into next year but I feel like the strikes will be over by mid fall and actors will be promoting which should only help,
