We've already been over this.

That external inflation calculator doesn't account for the rise in ticket prices, which were out of step with the CPI: http://collider.com/movie-ticket-price-inflation-statistics/

But that is exactly the point that I am making:

Being able to raise prices above the rate of "general inflation" or "average price increases across the economy" is what every company/industry is hoping for. Being able to raise your prices above the CPI is a sign of pricing power. In other words, movies have become somewhat more of a "luxury product" in recent years. The winners in capitalism are broadly those who manage to do exactly this. To give some examples from the US economy in recent years/decades: the pharmaceutical industry, education industry, landowners have raised prices well above the right of inflation, therefore hogging a larger share of the overall pie. On the other hand, electronic products, apparel makers and retailers have seen the prices they can charge customers fall, hence suffering a considerable fall in their share of the economic pie.

When you manage to realize selling prices above the rate of inflation in the economy, this means that you are getting more real value per one ticket. Hence my claim that one ticket sold by TFA is worth more in real terms than a ticket sold by Titanic in 1997.

Here for example you can read about Big Pharma's awesome pricing power. It's great for them: http://www.aarp.org/about-aarp/press-center/info-12-2016/brand-name-drug-prices-increase-nearly-130-times-faster-than-inflation.html

And that is despite the great revaluation of the USD since late 2014. The growth of the Chinese market has gone a long way in partly mitigating the USD appreciation.

No one (well no one reasonable) will ever disagree with this, the best way to evaluate how different movie made in money at the box office is certainly using the US inflation ratio.

But that is not what people usually try to achieve when they are adjusting for something else.

This is hilarious - what movie did Brie Larson think she was doing?

The top comment:  This is a movie about a giant gorilla that fights dinosaurs

That's cute and so "socially relevant" coming from Brie, lol.

Journalists that face death from giant gorillas deserve respect. The rest not so much. And movies are a form of activism. The rest of us have to work for living. Lucky you.
