The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Hotel Transylvania 3 380 2308 16.46%
Skyscraper 60 1548 3.88%

HT3 Comps:

106% of Coco ($54.1M)

292% of Ferdinand ($39.2M)

190% of Jumanji ($68.7M)

248% of Paddington 2 ($27.3M)

112% of Peter Rabbit ($28M)

369% of Sherlock Gnomes ($39.1M)

15% of Incredibles 2 ($27.2M)

Although most of my comps are pointing to something in the high 20s, but I feel that's way too low, and doesn't correlate with Pulse and MT, so probably something around the Ferdinand/Gnomes comp, maybe higher.

Skyscraper Comps:

167% of The Foreigner ($21.9M)

30% of Jumanji ($10.8M)

193% of 12 Strong ($30.6M)

102% of Death Wish ($13.2M)

54% of Tomb Raider ($12.7M)

70% of Pacific Rim ($19.6M)

28% of Ready Player One ($11.6M)

49% of Rampage ($17.4M)

250% of Sicario 2 ($47.5M)

My 2 locals on HT3...(No comps to Incredibles 3 b/c that was my vacation)

1st (Cinemark)- 42/110 (5pm 2d), 26/110 (7:30pm 2d), 5/110 (9:55pm 3d) for 73/330 (not bad)

2nd (Regal) - 77/170 (5pm 2d), 12/70 (5:30pm 3d), 45/75 (7:30 2d), 6/70 (8pm 3d), 2/75 (10:10 2d), 0/70 (10:45 3d) for 138/530 (pretty good)

3d is obviously way weaker than 2d...but that's the state of the industry...2d is selling pretty well, especially for a Thursday (even with it being summer)...

It will be interesting if they report Thursday previews tomorrow with or without the early Amazon preview money...

I don't know why Sony bothered doing Thurs previews for HT3.

These animated films typically don't do well with previews anyway.

I never understand this criticism. It's money, and theaters will gladly dump lower grossing movies on Thursday to show a new release.

They do in the summer when kids are off. It's the rest of the year where they avoid doing them because they know the target audience is in school.

This looks to be doing $2m+ or so in previews. Why wouldn't they do it?

That seems...fine for a walkup based movie?

That's actually much worse than what Rampage did here (and isn't getting the giant screen auditorium like that film did). Gonna really need to hope business picks up by the time it starts.

Thursday per screen averages:

Emoji - $408

Ice Age - $303

Boss Baby - $556

Double the average of this at 3,000 theaters today is $2.533 million.  This makes $844 PTA, and approximately 92 purchases per location at $9.16 avg. price.

Also last night, Sony's The Emoji Movie took in $900K from 2,205 Thursday early shows starting at 5PM. This is actually an improvement on the $800k The Angry Birds Movie brought in from previews before its $38.1 million opening as well as an improvement on the $650k brought in by Captain Underpants before its $23.8 million debut last month. At the same time, it's just behind the $850k preview gross for Ice Age: Collision Course, which opened with $21.3 million last July.  *Fox started Thursday previews for Ice Age: Collision Course at 5PM and the film brought in $850,000 from 2,804 theaters.*http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4309&p=.htm

Fox and Dreamworks' The Boss Baby wasn't too far behind, grossing a strong $1.5 million from ~2,700 theaters on Thursday evening with screenings beginning at 5PM. As always with animated titles, it isn't easy to draw much of a comparison as this is $100k over the $1.4 million Big Hero 6 brought in on Thursday night before opening with $56.2 million. It's also more than double the $650k Fox's Home brought in from Thursday previews in 2015 before opening with $52.1 million.

Debuting in 3,700 theaters, Skyscraper is outpacing Rampage at the same point in the sales cycle according to online ticket retailer Fandango.com and we're seeing a similar performance when it comes to IMDb page view data. In fact, Skyscraper is not only outpacing Rampage over the two weeks leading up to release, it's outpacing Johnson's Hercules ($29.8m opening), The Legend of Tarzan ($38.5m opening) and Central Intelligence ($35.5 million opening) while pacing behind Johnson's 2015 hit San Andreas, which debuted with $54.5 million.

Top 10 predictions:

Quote
  • Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (4,200 theaters) - $45.0 M
  • Skyscraper (3,782 theaters) - $34.0 M
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (4,206 theaters) - $32.1 M
  • Incredibles 2 (3,705 theaters) - $17.5 M
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (3,692 theaters) - $15.5 M
  • The First Purge (3,038 theaters) - $9.2 M
  • Sicario: Day of the Soldado - $4.1 M
  • Uncle Drew (2,381 theaters) - $3.6 M
  • Ocean's 8 (1,618 theaters) - $3.1 M
  • Sorry to Bother You (805 theaters) - $2.9 M

I'm a bit surprised the sites are going with 30+ for Ant-Man this weekend. To me it seems very likely to drop as much as Homecoming did, at least.

Was kinda hoping Sorry to Bother You could reach $4M but $3M would be a fine number considering how wide it's expanding. Movie's probably too weird/indie to have wider appeal anyway.
