The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Well, to give a more hopeful note to openers, here's presales at my theaters tonight...

Regal local

Sicario - 2 showings - 53/90, 16/90 for 69/180 (not bad)

Uncle Drew - 2 showings - 20/75, 6/75 for 26/150 (not good, but not crash and burn numbers)

Cinemark local

Sicario - 4 showings - 25/110, 5/60, 13/110, 6/60 for 49/340 (not as good, but not terrible)

Uncle Drew - 3 showings - 0/60, 0/60, 0/60 for 0/180 (okay, these are crash and burn numbers - I think they are pulling the last show for something else)

So, to sum up, Sicario is looking pretty good, and I'd expect it to meet or beat tracking...Uncle Drew is all over the place - somewhere between crash and burn and not good, so I'd say tracking or below without some really nice walking up...although, this could totally walk up...

Hotel 3 Preview 57 113 50.44%

Sicario 2 24 1044 2.30%
Uncle Drew 154 1344 11.46%

I didn't get the Jumanji or Love, Simon advance previews, so it's hard to judge Hotel Transylvania, but filling up half the auditorium seems pretty good, especially since there's still two days left for more seats to be filled.

Sicario 2 Comps:

66% of The Foreigner ($8.7M)

30% of The Commuter ($4.1M)

77% of 12 Strong ($12.2M)

50% of The 15:17 to Paris ($6.3M)

80% of Annihilation ($8.9M)

41% of Death Wish ($5.3M)

21% of Tomb Raider ($5.1M)

28% of Pacific Rim 2 ($7.8M)

19% of Rampage ($7M)

Hmmm....with this movie doing well on MT and Pulse, as well as being walk-up driven, it's possible my theater is just an outlier, but it does seem like low-teens or below is possible.

Uncle Drew Comps:

77% of Jumanji ($27.8M)

92% of Pitch Perfect 3 ($18.4M)

43% of Proud Mary ($4.3M)

99% of Den of Thieves ($15.7M)

32% of Acrimony ($5.6M)

118% of Super Troopers 2 ($18M)

152% of Traffik ($6M)

36% of Breaking In ($6.3M)

148% of Superfly ($10.2M)

Again, another hard one to track, especially since black-led movies consistently overperform at my theater. I feel like somewhere around Superfly seems like the safest bet looking at tracking and Pulse sales, but of course, this is also a walk-up based movie, so it's a real wild card.

Wouldn’t be surprised if I2 gets the bulk of AM&tW double features either, given the tonal fit (and the fact that WiT doesn’t need anymore 😛).

Yes, though it will probably be around $30m that w/e so the impact wouldn't be that noticeable

Fandango App Monday Tues Wed Thursday

Sicaro 2 788 1282 3403 3053
Uncle Drew 274 473 1201 1438

Fandango eyeball count at 1:45pm & 4:45pm EST

Sicario 2: 16 avg (1:45pm)  21.5 (4:45pm)

Uncle Drew: 7.33 avg (1:45pm),  8.33pm (4:45pm)

[UD with the same 45.8% of S2 as in the  AP count so my eyeballs seem to be working]

Sicario 2

Atomic Blonde:  15.5 (1pm) 18.3 (4pm) 28 (7pm)

Am. Assassin:     5 (2:10pm), 13.2 (4pm), 18.75 (7:15pm)

American Made:  7 (2:15 avg),  12 (4:30pm), 20 (7pm), 20 (7:30)

Foreigner:    4.8 (2pm) 11 (7:00pm), 15.4 (7:30), 12.6 (7:40)

I don't know what to comp Uncle Drew to.  Is this a comedy teens and adults are going to or is geared toward for kids?

Edit - looking at reviews it's more for teens and adult so Snow Dogs as a comp is out.

7:00 shows:

Uncle Drew: 33/78

Sicario: 22/60

Sicario's late show has sold 5 tickets while Drew's is currently empty. I'll do comps later, but this is very strong for Drew and pretty weak for Sicario depending on the comp. I believe this is on par with what The Foreigner sold, which underperformed a bit the first two days. Sicario's already bordering on 40 tickets for tomorrow though

In my area Sicario is selling really well at 7pm in multiple different theaters

Quote

Sony’s “The Equalizer 2” and Universal’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” are heading for solid North American launches in the $27 million to $33 million range for the July 20-22 weekend, early tracking showed Thursday.

Get that money, Denzel.
