Eric Prime
Y'all are giving out quality roasts on Valonqar, but um... Quote (not surprising cause Davis, Rodriguez and Erivo always look angry and resentful on and off the screen). We not gonna mention this? We aren't going to acknowledge what all three ladies have in common? His posts are usually yikes-tastic, but this is on another level. 3
Valonqar
they are not likable so that's that. otherwise their movie wouldn't have flopped. Look what Rose Byrne + Octavia did for Instant family. Or Gaga + Bradley for ASIB. Or MBJ + Tessa + Sly for Creed. etc. Edited December 3, 2018 by Valonqar 1

CoolioD1
20 films advance for VFX shortlist (narrowed down to a 10 film shortlist later this month) Quote “Ant-Man and the Wasp” “Aquaman” “Avengers: Infinity War” “Black Panther” “Bumblebee” “Christopher Robin” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” “First Man” “Incredibles 2” “Isle of Dogs” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” “Mary Poppins Returns” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” “Mortal Engines” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” “Paddington 2” “A Quiet Place” “Ready Player One” “Solo: A Star Wars Story” “Welcome to Marwen” nothing too surprising i guess. i thought maybe annihilation could get a nod since ex machina won but i guess not. i think: Aquaman Avengers Black Panther First Man Mary Poppins will be the nominees. isle of dogs could get a kubo-esque nod.
SLAM!
1 hour ago, Valonqar said: they are not likable so that's that. otherwise their movie wouldn't have flopped. Look what Rose Byrne + Octavia did for Instant family. Or Gaga + Bradley for ASIB. Or MBJ + Tessa + Sly for Creed. etc. I think you've got a bit of a point here. A lot of the films that become successes right now are because of how inviting they seem to the moviegoers (A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc). A film that I'm willing to link to Widows is Steve Jobs (2015), which similarly had a large cast of familiar actors and vocal support from critics, but failed to appeal exceptionally well to the mainstream audiences because it didn't look like a fun time at the movies. At the same time, I don't think it's fair to link likability to an actor if they've been typecast. I'll run through all three actresses. Michelle Rodriguez. I'm sure that people were rooting for her character in Avatar when she was flying her airship during the war, and I know I felt sad when her character died; plus, when her character Letty won that drag race in the first Fast & Furious film, there was a shot of her in the car, smiling, her hair thrashing violently against the sharp wind; people had to find her likeable then. Cynthia Erivo. She hasn't actually hadthat many screen credits yet, so I don't think it's actually all that fair to judge her with what little we've seen of her. However, she was a broadway actress before getting film roles, and from my experience, it's pretty hard to not be likable as a broadway actor. Plus, I'm sure she'll be likeable when she plays Harriet Tubman next year. Viola Davis. Her Twitter profile picture shows her with a smile on her face, and she's been posting a string of weekly messages with the hashtag #MondayMotivation. So even if we haven't exactly seen her star in a comedy (unless you count Suicide Squad), you can see, in reality, that she embraces human attributes such as compassion through her platform on Twitter. It really comes down to the directors of their films, I think. You never know; in a few years, a director will come along and cast them in a film that would benefit from more warmth and more positive emotion, and we'll see them break their typecasting, and they'll evoke warmer emotions on the screen in different ways than they ethically should in films like Doubt, Widows, Girlfight (Rodriguez' initial breakout role), Bad Times at the El Royale, and Fences (which Davis was likable enough to win an Oscar for). CoolioD1
Cynthia Erivo doesn't really play angry or resentful in either of the movies she's been in. nowhere near that. but what do i know, i actually saw the movies and i'm not using some angry reddit post or whatever dude reads to craft his opinions. SLAM!
Anyway, I think it's pretty crazy that Annihilation wasn't even able to make that twenty film VFX shortlist! Very disappointed in that! And, while I've seen and enjoyed Isle of Dogs twice, I simply don't understand what the special effects are doing to constitute its nomination. I would very much appreciate an explanation. Besides that, I'd say that's a fairly decent list of nominees. If there's five films in particular I feel pretty confident about for the ten-film shortlist, it's: Avengers: Infinity War Black Panther First Man Mary Poppins Returns Welcome to Marwen (not joking here; what's seen in the trailers is pretty impressive)

They may also go for Fallout just from being impressed by the practical effects amidst all the CGI.

Why “Best Actor/Actress Under 23” and not 25? Also so happy I missed out on the @Valonqar stuff earlier (which I’m sure is rooted in his beloved Black Panther having no shot at winning Best Picture - might as well check out completely on this season altogether man). titanic2187
With this oscar season pace, this will be the deadest oscar season since 2012's The artist. 2013's oscar was the year with the most buzz in recent year, when argo, the best director snub, still managed to win best picture.
