So...

Is Paddington 2 eligible?

Here's my opinion on Paddington 2.

While people may open it up for eligibility, fully embracing the film now could come at a cost. If it manages to sneak into a few categories and the forum-wide top 25, that'll hurt its eligibility and perception for next year's awards and Top 25. It'd be a shame if people didn't vote for it next year because it was recognized in a year with only partial eligibility.

People have as much time to see Paddington 2 as they do several other contenders - and more than some where the films aren't expanding nationwide before voting.

While this is true, Paddington 2 is widely regarded as a 2018 release for many people. And if, hypothetically, 2018 as a year in film is mediocre enough to allow for Paddington 2's inclusion on the list, there will be an ethical problem. If a film is getting this much support, that's great. But you know how many people who are getting the film in 2018 would feel sad if it couldn't run for the 2018 awards? That's why my suggestion is to simply wait a year, even if they can see the film in time. It's already an excellent candidate for placement on 2018 lists.

If Your Name and My Life as a Zuchini are regarded as 2016 films, then I think Paddington 2 should be regarded as a 2018 film, because those situations adhere to the American theatrical release patterns.

It's interesting that, out of all the January films in so many years, this is the one to conjure up the support needed to cause this kind of situation.

If @The Shape of Pasta disagrees, then go with what Spaghetti says.  I personally think it should qualify for next years BOFFYs, simply because we've gone by Domestic release dates for everything else (and Paddington didn't have a domestic release until January)

The difference is Your Name and Zucchini were barely released in 2016 and yet still qualified as 2016 voting though hardly anyone in the U.S. could see them.  Even their later "wide" releases were limited.

Paddington 2 on the other hand is a wide release.  Now if one wants to have it as a 2018 fine but it's not being harmed in any way - in fact it benefits from a wide release fresh on everyone's minds.  It's getting support since it was released widely in other territories and we have a lot of UK members.

@New Year New Panda I know I might be asking a lot, but couldn't you and Spaghetti extend the deadline until the end of the month? I haven't been able to see a movie in weeks and I got a ton of free time starting this monday.

I echo this because all of the indie stuff hasn't expanded yet.
