Academy Awards adding a "Best Popular Film" category. Good or bad idea? Academy walks it back, won't be presented this year

Recommended Posts

from the NYT article

Quote

The academy’s 54-member board voted to rethink the creation of the category at a closed meeting on Tuesday night. Some board members, including John Bailey, the organization’s president, voiced support for the category at the meeting, while others, including the actress Laura Dern, were adamantly opposed, according to two board members, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

Laura Dern holdo-kamikaze'd it.

Those people also said the director Steven Spielberg, who sits on the board and has enormous influence, was uncomfortable with plans to introduce the category at the coming Oscars, which will be held on Feb. 24.

and spielberg not being into it is probably what officially kills it.

The stunt coordinator for the film obviously

Obviously over the performer or the stunt choreographers ? I guess so.

But has for the coordinator could it not be an issue on some modern production ?, is there not often a different team that was making the cars stuff, completely different team that only did the air/parachute sequence on the movie and nothing else. Movie do tend to have multiple stunt coordinator with sometime saying that was the New-York stunt coordinator or stunt coordinator Canada.

I have the impression that movie often use local stunts team and for International affair that mean a lot of different stunt team ( and very often being the same for all the movies).

Kathleen Kennedy is getting a Honorary Oscar for some weird reason.

probably because she's been producing classics for near 40 years, has produced more than one Highest Grossing Movie of All Time and has 8 oscar nominations. something to do with those maybe?

Those Oscar are better served for people that do not have a role that is rewarded by competitive Oscar unlike Kennedy or outside the Hollywood industry working in foreign language that can virtually never win like a Chan, Fellini (like 12 noms 0 win), Godard, etc....

But they also use it for the it is weird/circumstance and timing that made it so you never won like O'Toole, Sutherland, etc...

The numbers of movies that marked their era is just really high, with 8 nominations without a win and executive producer on some winners like Schindler List.

Schindler list

E.T.

Back to the Fuutre

Force Awaken

Color Purple

Munich

Rogers Rabbit

Jurassic Park

Twister

Arachnophobia

Indiana Jones

Empire of the Sun

A.I.

as long as kathleen kennedy remains at lucasfilm she's gonna be out of the running for another competitive oscar so an honourary one makes sense. usually they give them to people they don't see as having a shot at winning a normal one anymore. which is why i thought it was weird when spike lee got one a couple years ago especially now that he looks to be in contention this year but i guess after Oldboy they just totally thought he was past it.

Kennedy absolutely deserved it though timing does look off now that she's experiencing huge backlash and Solo mega bomb. Should have been awarded long time ago.

Would it not be strange for the winner of an honorary Oscar to win a competitive one ? Did it ever happened ?

also spielberg was given the same award kennedy is getting a few years before schindler's list. but the thalberg award they do have a tendency to give to people who already have oscars or go on to win oscars anyway. unlike other honorary awards. also it's not a proper oscar it looks like this

I don't understand why is honorary Oscar considered shutting the door to competitive one? Those people are still young and can produce competitive movies. It isn't like giving it to 100+ years old and senile Kirk Douglas.

it's not clearly, it's just that usually they won't give people an honorary award until they figure they're kinda done/near the end of their career which is why the exceptions are weird.
