Academy Awards adding a "Best Popular Film" category. Good or bad idea? Academy walks it back, won't be presented this year

Those Oscar are better served for people that do not have a role that is rewarded by competitive Oscar unlike Kennedy or outside the Hollywood industry working in foreign language that can virtually never win like a Chan, Fellini (like 12 noms 0 win), Godard, etc....

But they also use it for the it is weird/circumstance and timing that made it so you never won like O'Toole, Sutherland, etc...

The numbers of movies that marked their era is just really high, with 8 nominations without a win and executive producer on some winners like Schindler List.

Schindler list

E.T.

Back to the Fuutre

Force Awaken

Color Purple

Munich

Rogers Rabbit

Jurassic Park

Twister

Arachnophobia

Indiana Jones

Empire of the Sun

lol, BP is not even top 10 of year, we don't know on what merits this award will be judged, will scores be weighted or raw vote?

Since when does the academy give a flying fyck what’s in your top ten? Your opinion means zilch when it comes to their nominees. Stop acting like your opinion accounts for anything at all.

They were honest to god discussing audience voting

The Academy had not yet determined the criteria for the new award when it announced it—one idea under discussion, according to multiple board members, was that the award should be voted on by members of the public, to encourage more audience participation in the telecast. Another proposal on the table would have Academy members doing the voting, but would limit eligibility for the award to movies released in a certain number of theaters, or earning a certain amount at the box office.

Dumb but not as dumb as making it just apply to any saturated wide release.

This entire word salad is crazy

Hudson explained that the idea behind a new category honoring more widely seen films was a pure one. “The impetus for this was, how do we celebrate achievement and excellence in a wider scope of movies than the Academy has been honoring over the past several years? It has slightly narrowed over the past years.” she said. “So how do we celebrate those movies, how do we widen the scope a little bit? And that principle we all believe in and the Board of Governors agrees that is unchanging, something everyone adheres to. So we’ll continue to refine it and study this award and any other improvements. We talked to a lot of our members. We had a lot of small focus groups and discussions with members prior to this direction that we announced, and we will continue to do that. In fact [Academy President] John Bailey and I are going on this member tour this fall in San Francisco, New York, London, everywhere.” Their plan is to get the pulse of the rank and file on this and other concerns.

From what I have heard directly from many of those members, using the word “popular” to describe the new category was a bad idea and just added to the problem. Hudson agrees that it wasn’t the best choice. “People misunderstood how we were using that phrase,” she old me. “We really meant films that audiences had wide access to. It’s always about excellence, but excellence and widely embraced films are not mutually exclusive. They forgot that the Academy members are choosing excellence. That is all they ever choose. It seemed to be more confusing than it was helpful.

probably because she's been producing classics for near 40 years, has produced more than one Highest Grossing Movie of All Time and has 8 oscar nominations. something to do with those maybe?

She was the nice, obedient little soldier of the oppressive male patriarchy on set.

Until she started to read Feminism Litterature 3.0 when she started her Lucasfilm Gig.

The Academy nominates a lot of average movies with best Pictures, they can give an award to a well made comic book that touched the cultural zeitgeist.

If not they are irrelevant elitist snobs who can simply enjoy lower TV ratings.
