Jay Roach’s Roger Ailes movie starring John Lithgow as the disgraced Fox News Channel boss is no longer going forward at Annapurna; this is days before its production start, Deadline has confirmed.

Word is the production cost of $35M was soaring upwards from that point and for this film to be realized in the way that the filmmakers want it, they’re now considering Focus Features and co-financier Participant Media. Bron Studioscontinues to stay aboard as co-financier. Amblin was rumored to be in the mix and that is no longer the case.

In the wake of the news, Bron Studios released the statement, “BRON Studios is thrilled to be producing and co-financing Fair and Balanced.  We love the project, filmmakers and cast and look forward to supporting their vision.” Fair and Balanced is the working title of the movie.

I really hope Annapurna was not scared off this movie because of political pressure.

That not uncommon for Ellison to walk out of a project, even if it is a bit last minute, on Downsizing:

But even as the budget was being miniaturized, Ellison started getting cold feet. Although she never officially backed out
of the production, she stopped returning phone calls from Brad Grey, who was running Paramount at the time (he died this year). Grey decided to go ahead and greenlight the movie
in early fall 2015 without Ellison, footing the entire budget.

Steve jobs:

On Nov. 13, 2014, Megan Ellison and Annapurna backed out of the project. In less than a month, Ellison went from literally begging to be involved in the project in any way possible to writing, "I'm having a hard time moving forward on Jobs. I can't help but not feel great about the way things played out until now and the level of investment has only become much more significant."

If the budget moved during the pre-production, that could be the reason.

Nah, it sounds like they realized the budget was starting to get out of control, and the possible box office revenue was gonna be very low in comparison (I mean, outside of 50% of the US, who else in the entire world would care or watch this?  And would that 50% of the US bother when they get it every day?)

Now, if you don't mind losing acres of money on this type of vanity project, you can do it (like The Promise https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-promise-could-lose-80m-serving-a-higher-purpose-996632), but not a lot of folks like to lose acres of money...

Sounds like Focus is gonna pick it up. Can't say I'm surprised given their recent ties to the stars (The Beguiled, Atomic Blonde, Tully, Boy Erased, Mary Queen of Scots).

This is going to get interesting. Sooner or later someone involved with this film is going to yell "political pressure" is why the film is being passed on (whether accurate or not) and they will cite "free speech" to try to shame some studio into picking up the film.
