Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom | December 22, 2023 | David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (co-writer of first film) returns

Interesting anecdote from the article though:

"Turmoil aside, the sequel might just work at the box office. The first “Aquaman” also was ho-hum in early testing and found its footing in postproduction. A studio source says “Aquaman 2” is following a similar trajectory. Early tracking shows strong interest and puts the film’s opening on par with the first “Aquaman.”

“Everybody’s down on DC, but there is a chance, especially with the limited competition during the holiday season, that ‘Aquaman’ could still play like gangbusters because of lack of product,” says Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Sometimes the right film at the right time is all you need.”"

Huh? It’s literally a hit piece from Variety directly against the film with about 5 different pieces of shady/bad publicity/ attacks.

Not going after Amber either. Never have.

I'm aware. You're not the person I'm talking about mate.

It would be funny if it followed a similar trajectory to the first despite the DCU crumbling around it

Neither

The Marvels was gonna be pretty close to done by Christmas no matter what, I don’t think it having bad tracking will affect Aquaman

I'm not asking if The Marvels will literally affect Aquaman's gross, but if The Marvel's doing this low can inspire more confidence in your $375M WW prediction

Unrelated but if the Marvels is tracking this poorly for a November 10th release date, imagine how much it would've done if it came out on July 28th like it was once planned to?

I'd say it would've done higher in July release date, even despite the BarbienHeimer phenomenon.

because

a. There's no school

b. It was hot as hell, so people wanted to be in an air conditioned environment

c. Barbie was a comedy, Oppenheimer a biopic drama.

d. Student loan repayments restart this month. Who's the main demographic for Marvel movies? Young Adults.

Well at this point I think it’s safe to say even if this is successful and there is a third, Momoa is prob the only one involved who will jump at coming back.

He’s most likely going to play Lobo for the DCU. The writing is on the wall at this point. He’s done with Aquaman.

What do you think the excuse will be if this film has poor initial tracking? I'm guessing the most common one will be "don't worry, the movie will have positive word of mouth and leg out" (even though people said the exact same about The Flash, insisting that it was the "best CBM since TDK" and look at how that turned out LOL)
