Shazam! Fury of the Gods | March 17 2023 | Sandberg returns to direct. Will Sinbad return? | Get vaccinated!

For years, critics and general audience never really pressured studios to make unique / different comic book / big-budget movies and now suddenly they're tired of them lol. I mean no chance that I would pay to see movies like Shazam 2, Ant-Man 3 or Thor 4 but it's kinda hilarious.

Just came back from the theater. Also watched the first Shazam today before I watched this one. For me this was a massive letdown. I understand some of the mixed reviews. It dials so much up but to me lost what I liked about the first one. It kinda reminds of another cbm movie that released recently that did the same. That said, my sister who I watched it with really liked it. So I do think a lot of people will end up liking it.

Familiarity breeds contempt.

Out of theater reaction:

This was definitely a fun watch and is (imo) a superior film to Antman or Black Adam. The comedy works well without being over the top. The villains are a bit underwhelming, but miles better than Sabbac from Black Adam. Action sequences were cool and the CGI wasn't too bad. If this film released in 2019, I think it would have been received much better by critics.

Rating: 8/10

Feel bad for him... he has seemed frustrated with a lot of the things the last couple of week, wonder if there were any behind the scenes drama about marketing and all that. Anyway he´s a fantastic director so I would love to see him take on another cbm or go back to horror.

They moved the release date like 5 times and didn't advertise the movie.

I'd be pissed too.

I thought this was ok, I was entertained. It did go on a bit though. Surprisingly and unfortunately, Lucy Liu was the weak link.

Yup. She was underwhelming here like she didn't care at all. 😅

Idk, this had a pretty good Comic-Con trailer, and then the marketing after that just... fizzled out? Seems to be a recurring issue at WB, M4trix had the same pattern. If I was Sandberg, I'd be upset too.

Came back from the theater as well. I had an absolute blast! It kept the charming veneer of the first film and the emotions and the comedy I thought hit really well. I got teary eyed at some scenes, but idk I'm a softy like that. And I high key uncontrollably laughed at loud in the theater at some of the jokes. David F. Sandberg knows that the secret ingredient to a good super hero movie is to have a compelling human story behind it. And I think he nailed it here.

I don't get how this is getting bad word of mouth. This seems to be a crowdpleaser. My audience was enjoying themselves at least. I don't know what people online are smoking for real. It's a shame this is getting suboptimal box office returns because this is leagues better than Ant-Mid Quantumidia.

If I had ant criticisms it may be that the ending falling action after the climax that includes a resolution to something felt a little rushed and out of nowhere. But I can see how writing that in without making it seem awkward would be difficult.
