I disagree and find most of your rankings either harsh or opposite of me. I would get if you were complaining about how she was played in Spider-Man 3, because everyone but Thomas Haden Church and Rosemary Harris were going full camp melodrama, but I hear these complaints about her and her chemistry with Tobey in the first two. Like the ending of the first one highlights his sacrificing a chance at being with MJ/having his own life in favor of his duty as Spider-Man, but the impact is blunted for me by the fact that Peter's relationship with MJ in that movie seems very superficial and contrived. And in SM2 when he gives up being Spider-Man and just watches a person getting mugged without even trying to help it just makes Peter seem like a jerk, in a sequence that seemed to be intended to make his struggle feel tragic. I just don't buy that Peter would make that decision in that moment, even if he had given up being Spider-Man. Honestly my biggest issue with those movies is that Peter ends up feeling like a bit more of a vessel for ideas about heroism instead of a fully realized character (this becomes a movie-crippling issue in SM3 when he makes dumb and out-of-character decisions all over the place, in 1 and 2 I find it a bit irritating but not too bad). Also, I think you're selling Homecoming short a bit (won't discuss FFH due to spoilers). At the beginning of Homecoming Peter is ready to give up his life as Peter Parker in order to be a full-time Spider-Man. As he encounters the threat of Vulture, this escalates, and he ditches school, his decathlon team, etc. to fight Vulture, and he desperately wants to leave behind his old life and be an Avenger. When Tony takes away the suit, he's forced to realize the value of his that life (which is seen in a montage of him regaining aspects of it). And when he's under the rubble, he realizes that it's not a choice between being Peter Parker and being Spider-Man, because Peter Parker is Spider-Man (the choice between keeping his old identity and being a hero is a false one). Thus, when Tony presents him with what he had wanted at the beginning, a chance to be an Avenger, he declines, because he knows the value of what he has in life and won't abandon it to chase fame and glory, and he knows that he doesn't need to stop being Peter Parker in order to be a hero. Holland's MCU version just has too much humor for my tastes. Mekanos Posted July 9, 2019 Share Posted July 9, 2019 I generally agree that the Raimi movies (the first two at least) have some really solid set pieces and emotional moments, but the way the movies are tied together never really click for me. They feel disconnected scene to scene and I've never really particularly been wowed by Maguire in the role, which might be because the script doesn't give him a ton to work with. Anyway, did CinemaScore change the way they rate movies or have audiences become more lenient towards movies in general? I know CinemaScore and online ratings aren’t the greatest judge of WOM, but I was surprised to see that none of the previous Spider-Man movies had higher than A-. The first 2 at least were clearly well received given their legs. Plus the B+ for SM3 and TASM2’s make sense. At that point you have some actual nostalgia to tap and get a fresh take on the character ala old Parker in Spiderverse. Maybe, though by 2017 the Maguire movies would have already lost their "big fish in the genre" status to Avengers and so I doubt 4 would get anywhere near the original trilogy success and popularity even with the nostalgia factor.
