Top 30 films of 1989 (baumer's favourite year)IMDB is the source...if it's 1989 on IMDb it qualifies...Aug 25th is deadline

This is why IMDB is trash.

edit: I mean, it’s not trash-trash, but it doesn’t have enough curation by people who know what they’re doing. HEATHERS is listed as having a 1988 release in Italy, but the “release” was at MIFED, which is literally a film market for international buyers/sellers/distributors. It’s not even a standard film festival. To equate that with an actual release seems insane to me.

Good catch!

Well I saw Heather's at the theatre in 1989. Listing it as a 1988 movie is just kind of silly.

If I run a 1988 list, I'm giving Heathers an extra chance there because I think a lot of people just checked IMDB and concluded Heathers shouldn't be eligible.

But everyone should also check BOM, if they are unsure of when a movie was released. They should use both sources.

Well I don't know about that. Maybe it should be rated by when it had a major release in its home country.

we were using imdb to go by year of premiere/first release, not american release.

I didn't know. I thought we were able to use both sources for release date.

Of course.

A movie like say The Intouchables was released in france on 2nd of November 2011, but had US box office release of the 25th of May 2012.

So should that movie count for both years or just 2011 where it was released in its home country?

If it was disqualified for either year, the person who makes a list should make sure that it's qualified for at least one list.

Here is most of what is in the top 200 movies, after i took the liberty to go through the trailers.  I spent about 4 hours on YouTube with the trailers and rated them in order of how i want to see them.  (for comparison, 2018-2019 would be almost all 7's)

I bolded the ones that were in the top 30 at the 1989 box office.  I would have thought the majority of the romantic comedies was a test for hate , as they made all the money, and looked like I would have wanted to cry from their reign over the masses.

For me it depends on whether that list is done contemporaneously or years later. If the former, it makes sense to count it as a 2012 movie because only the French would've had an opportunity to see it earlier. But if we're doing a retrospective and going years back, we should revert to the year it first premiered anywhere. And especially when we go back 20-30 years, when a lot of major films didn't have commercial US releases - it's much easier to just stick with a single source. But this Heathers thing is not a hill I'm gonna die on.

This is very sensible. What gets really wacky are films that were either banned or unavailable in other countries for years. Like, what should ANDREI RUBLYEV's release date be?

1966. Today it isn't ours or the film's problem what distribution problems it had half a century ago.

Well this is what I am here for guys. If we run into some minor problems like this then feel free to come and talk to me. I know the deadline is pretty much just around the corner but I feel very comfortable in saying that Heather's is eligible because it is listed as a 1989 film in the US on the Internet movie database

Hey Limelight won an Oscar for Charlie Chaplin in the 1970s.

I will probably not allow Limelight on my list of 1970s movies though.
