An Elephant Sitting Still (2018, Hu)

is An Elephant Sitting Still worth finishing? I watched 40 minutes of it some time ago but the pacing killed me and the presentation was depressing (and the fact that the director committed suicide after he finished the film made it even more so miserable).

I know it's deliberate but even Long Day's Journey Into Night & Roma had more bearable pacings. (and they weren't 4 hours long )

Mrs. Tele and I watched about half of UNCLE BOONMEE awhile ago... we were liking it, we got interrupted, and never finished.

Also I finally watched FOUR LIONS (pretty great!). Hilarious (and stupid) side note: back in 2016, I had vaguely heard of it but hadn’t looked up when it was released or anything, so when I sat down to watch my screener for THE LION I confused it with the other.

Imagine my surprise when THE LION turned out not to be about bumbling jihadis.

I caught up with some of the 2011 films I hadn't seen - Take Shelter, A Separation and Margaret - and there's a chance all 3 will be making my top 50, with A Separation in particular being a lock for my top 10, I can't believe it took me so long to watch such a superb piece of cinema. I won't say too much for the people who haven't seen it yet, but the story went in a drastically different direction to what I expected based on the premise. Margaret was also pretty astounding. I went with the extended cut (3 hours) rather than the theatrical (2 and a half hours) and one of my thoughts when it ended was that while I adore Manchester by the Sea, this is what Kenneth Lonergan should've won his Oscar for (same with Anna Paquin by the way). Unfortunately, post-production was a complete mess but thankfully Lonergan's cut got to see the light of day.
There's still a handful of films from the decade I want to check out for the first time including Mommy, Weekend, Leviathan, Ida, 45 Years and The Hunt but I'll have to start finalising my list now.

I most likely already know the answer, but just to be completely clear: this is the Fincher, right?

a non-answer statement like this is what I expected but Silence being #1 on it gave me pause.

I don’t even know what you mean here. What’s the point of picking a movie from someone’s best list and asking them “is this even worth watching????”

I have also seen this movie and I can tell you that what you get in the first 40 minutes you then get over and over and over again. So if you weren't onboard early on, you almost certainly aren't going to be.

China had great output from 2019 (& 2018 festival releases) in Shadow, Long Day's Journey, Ash is Purest White and So Long My Son. shame Elephant wasn't on par.

unrelated to the ongoing poll but you should also watch You Can Count on Me from 2000 some time if you haven't since you are digging Lonergan. It's a great movie.
