I appreciate the venture to adult animation though

Eh, not really. If there's one thing I've learned from following the world of animation, it's that the success of anime hasn't really changed how major Hollywood studios view animation. That's not to say they don't see the potential in it-- heck, we're seeing that right now, since Warner Bros. is co-producing and distributing this movie-- but it hasn't encouraged American movie studios to make comparable movies of their own.

Ideally, if this movie is successful, other animation studios like Disney and DreamWorks will look at it and say "maybe animated movies don't have to just be for kids anymore!" But I doubt that'll happen. Because this is a Japanese co-production, it's probably instead going to be dismissed as "just another anime movie", and hence irrelevant to Hollywood animation.  If Warner Bros. had made this movie entirely in-house, instead of as a Japanese co-production, it might have more of an impact on the American animation scene.

I thought this was going to be CGI animation and parts of it, the fire and bridge look like it, so the whole thing feels off.

It does look more Japanese animation (the director) than anything. Don't think it's going to do well.

yeah this movie is fucked

I tend to agree. Im a huge LOTR fan and also a huge anime/animation fan, but this one just doesnt feel right to me. The animation style they chose feels off and i dont really see the point of this movies existence.

I mean no movie technically has a reason to exist.

This poster has "Netflix Series" written all over it. Seriously, if they wanted to release this film in theaters, they shouldn't have used an exact style that's the new normal for Netflix originals.

Yep, very true about the style but I'll be frank the quality of the animation is not theatrical standard. I have no problem with the style on its face if it was done much better on a much higher budget for theatrical but it's not even that. Everything looks stiff. I'm not a Ghibli only person, I watch the movies that the shows get in theaters, like Dragon Ball and Demon Slayer. I love Lord of the Rings and just watched the theatrical re-releases of the extended editions. All 3 movies. I love animation in general, its my favorite mode for storytelling. I'm right in the group of people being targeted and I don't even want to watch this lol, it just doesn't look good.

I hope that the people that are excited have a good time but that's really it.

I don't know if this is controversial to say, but unless it's Ghibli, people expect 24 fps animation. They want the fluidity of old-school Disney or DreamWorks, not anime (unless the film is specifically part of an anime franchise).

If WB's holiday season wasn't hinging upon this as their only entry (something's better than nothing) I would say sending this straight to Max would be a wise decision. Impossible to imagine this doing much better than the animated Star Wars movie that flopped in the late aughts.

I got a feeling Warners just gave permission for a Japanese Studio to make  this film, and did not sink their own money into it.

Something close to a Pickup film.
