The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim | December 13, 2024 | New Line/WB | Anime | Kenji Kamiyama directing.

Recommended Posts

The J.R.R. Tolkein franchise is heading back to the big screen in a fresh New Line and Warner Animation anime title The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.  I’m told that the Oscar-winning feature architects Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are not involved with the project as we speak, but that will be determined down the road. Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings: Return of the King scribe Philippa Boyens will be a consultant on the new project directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The pic is being fast-tracked with animation work done by Sola Entertainment. Voice casting is currently underway. Pic will be distributed around the globe by Warner Bros. Pictures.

What happened to Amazon?

Bit surprised that the price point for their deal did not include some form of windows exclusivity of tv-movies content or maybe it did, anime project can take a long time to make.

This is a weird and nonsensical sentence by Deadline. Are they involved or not? Seems very weird to imply that somehow  they might jump on board later after a ton of development work has been done. (tbh I’m perfectly fine with them not being involved.)

Tele, just think about the reaction to this news on theonering.net in the good old days...a lot of purist heads would have exploded

Both theonering.net and theonering.com are still active, you should head over and see what they’re saying.

This is clearly a "You need to make at least one feature film within the next 5 years to keep the film rights another 10 years" mandate from the Tolkein estate to Warner Bros., a la Disney/Marvel to Sony.  They don't have other live-action scripts for "The Silmarillion" etc. ready, so they said "Let's get an animated film together...that counts, right?"  "Yeah, sure."  "Who's free?"  "An anime director? Cool, that'll do."  "We can get one of the Boyens involved?"  "Cool."  "Can we get Peter Jackson to give us a goodwill sendoff on social media?"  "Great!"

Possibly. May still turn out good.

Unfortunately, western audiences only seem to care for animation if it's for kids or comedy so i don't expect them to show up in large numbers. Maybe it makes up for that in Japan? ;)
