The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Champions had also yesterday 21 and 70 sold tickets (most sells in the AMC in LA).
It seems to be a quite nice feel good film and I could see this becoming a little hit if it (also) connects with the religious crowd. But so far I see no signs for that. It has shows in the AMC in Michigan where e.g. The Chosen and American Underdog did fine but had almost no presales there yesterday. Maybe that changes in the next few days.

Comps: Overcomer (8.1M OW) finally had 91 and 34 sold tickets
and American Underdog (5.9M, 2-day weekend including Christmas Day) had, also finally, 139 and 141 sold tickets.
Cry Macho (4.4M) had on the same day, Monday of the release week, 17 sold tickets for Friday.
And 80 for Brady (12.7M) had on Tuesday of the release week (= Champions has 1 day left) 120 and 91 sold tickets.

65, counted yesterday for Thursday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 44 (3 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 13 (2 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 7 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 12 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 5 (1 showtime)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 30 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 46 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 157.

Comps (all counted on Monday of the release week for Thursday): Plane (435k from previews) had 89 sold tickets,
Beast (925k) had 147
and Moonfall (700k) had 584.
Too uneven for a guess at the moment.
At least that doesn't look too bad.

65, counted yesterday for Friday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 41 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 19 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 4 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 4 (4 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 8 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 33 (5 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 33 (5 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 142.

Comps (all counted on Monday of the release week for Friday): Plane (10.3M OW) had 83 sold tickets,
Beast (11.6M) had 111,
The Protégé (2.9M) had 32
and Moonfall (9.9M) had 185 sold tickets.
Fantasy Island (12.3M) had on Wednesday (= 2 days left for 65) 506 sold tickets. But it had no Thursday show which makes 65 look worse than it is. With Thursday show it would have been ca. 250 sold tickets for Fantasy Island and 65 could reach that number by tomorrow.

Looks like mid-teens in my theaters at the moment.

John Wick: Chapter 4, counted today for Mar 23. 16 days to go.

Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 176 (6 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.105 (last Thursday it were 755).

I don't have many comps at the moment: Matrix 4 had with 8 days to go 1.875 sold tickets (= JW4 has 8 days left to overtake).
And Angel Has Fallen finally had 459 sold tickets.

JW4, counted today for Mar 24. 17 days to go.

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 224 (7 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 89 (10 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 10 (6 showtimes)

Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 19 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 174 (13 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 707. A bit frontloaded. Last Thursday it were 440 sold tickets.

With more than two weeks left these are good presales. Means in line with expectations of an OW of ca. 60M.

Cineplex updated their showings for this weekend and coming week, which happens to be March break here for most schools in the area. For whatever reason, they're going in pretty hard for Mummies. It seems to be in every major theatre, bumping Puss in Boots out of many, or at minimum just to matinees in bigger theatres.

I'm not sure if its getting a similar push in the states. All reports are that this is a direct to DVD quality. But it fills the void of zero kids films for months.

I'm curious how it does up here at least, as a bit of an experiment of what the baseline is for a kids movie is when there's no competition.

It finally happened - 1st local drops Avatar this weekend (Puss is the sole remaining movie from before February here, keeping a 1/2 screen of matinees)...Scream is getting 2.25 screens (6 PLF showings, 5 reg), while Creed holds 1 PLF screen and 1 regular and Ant Man drops to 1 regular screen.

2nd local holds both the 2022 holdovers with just 1 matinee each, and is giving Scream 2 regular screens and holding Creed on 2, while also dropping Ant Man to 1.

Creed had a bigger set, so I'd expect Scream to definitely come in lower for the weekend...but that still leaves a lot of room to get a good open.

PS - I should mention both theaters are opening 65 and Champions and putting them on one screen at the bottom of the "buy tickets" list in their smallest theaters...so they are there...and they'll be gone by John Wick 3, if I was a betting person...
