BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

It's interesting to see the significant effect the weather seems to play on box office, not only in Germany but in other European countries too. I'm sure it's logical and natural for you guys living there, but in Korea, weather hardly seems to affect the box office so it strikes me as somewhat of a novelty. I'm guessing it's not something that anyone did a study on, but I wonder if it is a phenomenon that naturally developed over time as the box office matured, or whether it is just a consequence of the European culture which tends to celebrate outdoor activities more than countries like South Korea. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

The basic problem is that Germans (and Austrians, to a lesser degree) are not that much into movies, as witnessed by the low overall admissions. I think in the USA you got 3 admissions/year per capita while here it's not even half of that (maybe someone cares to deliver detail data?). France is somewhere between those numbers.

So, movie-going is rarely the nr.1 choice when it comes to leisure activities - there's a lot of people who only consider watching a movie if there's no outdoor activity availabe (which includes beergardens and barbecues).

I think it's mainly that Germans/people from Austria love the sun and don't have much over the year. In most months it's just difficult to go to a lake, have a barbecue (which becomes more and more popular from my feeling), sit on the balcony in the evening etc. And you never know when it's over. Autumn or lousy weather can come very quickly. So many people say „let's use this weekend for a trip etc., we will have plenty of time to see a certain film in the next weeks/months“. And then maybe the next interesting film is released and they see that one instead.
The number of admissions decreased over the years in Germany, partly because of the high ticket prices, and as IndustriousAngel said, cinema was never such a big thing here in comparison to the USA e.g. So it's summer season vs. sunshine here and that normally wins. The big blockbusters should come out months later here but that of course wouldn't work too.
I don't know if the weather had such an impact in earlier decades but I heared this moaning over too much sunshine for years from the members of insidekino.de and wondered myself back then.

On the "bright" side, the weather has become more and more shitty and unpredictable in the last couple of years. It snows in March and now we have a cold weather period with plenty of rain (at least in Hesse) for two weeks now. The really sunny and hot weekends are becoming rare. But when they come, it typically is in the blockbuster season and everyone here is doing anything outdoors but going to a cinema.

It's getting worse for Spidey

down to 275k, that's just awful

DM3 up to 650k on the 3rd trend (-24%, slightly worse drop than DM2, Minions even increased in its 2nd weeknd iirc)

Wow, that's really bad for Spidey. There is so much less interest in this movie than I thought... Even 1M admissions isn't safe with that OW :o - it seems to be pretty frontloaded.

The drop is OK now for DM3 1,9M to 2M admissions after Sunday and still on course for 4M+.

POTC5 drops even better now! Down only 8%! It had a rather small OW but a good multipler.

That's because it opened on one of the hottest weekends of the year. If it would've opened on a rainy weekend, it could've come close to 1m admissions and 3m total. Alas, hopefully DM3 at least passes 4m total.

I knew that german doesn't like SH movies, but to the extent of fall behind the holdover of DM3 during its opening.....it's bombed right?

Could it be considered as a flop in german here?? how is the standard of Flop in german?

Six new releases in the Tops 20 - Spider-Man Homecoming was the big opener but didn't make much noise; a PTA of <500 is not what we were hoping for - that's on the level of TASM, no more. Among holdovers, there were nice drops or even increases - the only bad drops were Wonder Woman and Transformers 5. Despicable Me 3 ruled again; it didn't increase like the Minions did, but it's on course for well over 4mil total and still has a chance at 5mil.

Next weekend: Valerian is the big opener, but there's little buzz and it should open even lower than Spidey, so a 3rd weeekend on top for Gru and the Minions! Weather for the weekend is looking rather movie-friendly, so expect good holds! If domestic comedy Das Pubertier can increase once more, we'll have four releases with >100k admissions, not bad at all for a July weekend!

So, spider-man did almost 300k adm ow, and made $3.2M? What's the ticket price in Germany? Because, in my country (Romania) Fast8 did 366k adm in ow but made only $1.7M. And F8 finish his run with 684k adm and $3.17M. What the hell is wrong with our cinemas?

^:blink: are you kidding? omg, that's so so expensive. in Romania the ticket price is around 4$ for students, childrens and grandparents, and around $5.5 for adults.

but that's not all. we have one day per week (wednesday) and if you go to cinema with a friend, parent, girlfriend etc. you will pay around $6 for 2 tickets. no matter if the movie is 2D or 3D.
