How can they spend that much on the film?

Chasing real snow, apparently.

Insisting on shooting in natural light, apparently, which is even worse from a budget point of view. It's almost never done...for very good reason.

Yeah, the photography looks incredible, but nothing you could not have done using standard lighting.

Chasing the crew away as well.

John Toll did it on another revenge/survivalist western Seraphim Falls, all filmed on location. The budget was under $20m

Tele gave a list earlier in the topic (can't quote for some reason) of others

edit: some films shot mostly (or exclusively) with natural light:

- The Crossing Guard

- The Girlfriend Experience

- Malick movies

- Lost in Translation

- Children of Men

- Amadeus

- The Long Goodbye

- Bloody Sunday

- Gerry

- Breathless

- The Apu Trilogy

Filming outdoors on location makes one a slave to the weather and budgets can escalate but the budget for this started off at $60m...

There are no big crowd scenes,no big (in terms of number of extras)battle scenes, no big sets, and from the nature of the events, probably half the film will be Leo Di Caprio alone on the screen. Even taking that the pivotal fight with the Grizzly Bear might be expensive,60 Million should be more then enough for this story. Spielberg staged World War One in "War Horse" for just 70 Million dollars.

I am looking forward to this film,(nice to see the Mountain Man genre of Western revived) but still a wtf factor for how this particular story ended up costing so much.

Leo in the last 10 years is a built in 100 million so this movie will do well almost regardless of quality he is the most beloved actor around

No he's not a built in 100m draw. Blood Diamond, Revolutionary Road, Body of Lies, J Edgar, etc. His track record for the last 10 years is 6/10 over 100m. Impressive, but certainly not infallible. Most of his successes have had more inherent appeal than an Inarritu film. Putting Leo in Keaton's place would not have made Birdman gross 100m for example. Inarritu has made niche appeal films his whole career. We will see if he's capable of making something with mainstream appeal. I have high doubts.

No film with those actors and that cinematographer can be said to look dull. Watch Paul Blart and get some fucking perspective.

LOL you say this to the one person on the board who's seen Paul Blart 2

It looks boring. The plot seems overdone, Leo looks to be hammy in a not fun way, and there's nothing that makes look special besides it's unique setting and cinematography. I love Tom Hardy and all, but this looks to be an Awards Bait film that I watch just so I can say I saw all the nominees.

You have to exclude J.Edgar and Revolutionary Road. Those were 35m budget award plays, they weren't going over 100m even with a BP win. So that makes Leo's track record 6/8 in the last decade over 100m. Sure Leo wouldn't take Birdman to blockbuster level but The Reverant has a more commercial-friendly premise than the "meta" industry focused Birdman.

di caprio is a solid lead. these days mostly studios are just using stars to complement the drawing power of an 'event' piece, which is the main source of a draw.
