SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE | 309.3M overseas | 690.6M worldwide

Recommended Posts

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been pulled from the release schedule in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and across the Middle East, and will no longer have a theatrical run in the region.

It made $3M-$3.2M for the first film across all the countries in total. Probably loses $6M-$6.5M~ in total.

Terrible article. Does not even state why it is banned. Do we know why?

The authority said that the movie “contradicts the content controls in force,” and added that unless parts of the movie’s scenes were amended, it would not play in theaters locally.

“Out of our keenness on the safety of the content shown in cinemas, and our responsibility towards the viewers, we would like to point out that we will not permit or license any film that contradicts the content controls in force in the media system… and its implementing regulations, unless the production companies commit to implementing the required amendments,” the social media statement said.

@keysersoze123

Found this another article that stated the reasons. Don’t quite understand sadly whatever that means…

From what I'm read, it's about the frame with the trans flag in it. Stupid imo but it is what it is.

I thought it was due to the punk and anti-government spider-man having some screentime which made them scared, but instead is for this absurd reason? Not to mention it wasn't even noticeable unless you stop the film frame by frame...

There must be something else.

Weird. Could have just asked Sony to remove 1 freaking frame. Otherwise the movie is not controversial at all.

That's what they would have if that was the case. Disney made PR headlines in West for Dr Strange & Lightyear ban but other studios don't do such stuff. There must be some other reason.

But the release in Malaysia and Indonesia is greenlit without an issue. It is either local regulator "overlooked" the "improper" content, OR, something else that is only sensitive to Middle-east region.
