Do we think Wish can make 200DOM if Elemental gets close to 150. I imagine it'll get better reviews than Elemental.

I think everything regarding Disney animation right now should be taken with a worst case scenario outlook going in. The WDAS and Pixar brands just feel so damaged since covid. It was telling that even an absolute crowd pleasing soundtrack classic like Encanto couldn’t draw audiences back to theaters right around the time they were willing to start coming back. I just think Disney has diluted animation in the pandemic era way too much. Could be a long road back, or we need Wish to be another Frozen or Encanto level WOM to likely be able to blow up.

I also don’t love that WDAS just put out one of their worst critically received films, on the level of the 00s lows. That’s not exactly a good sign for quality if you know the historical patterns of WDAS, as I’ve mentioned. It feels very much like the celebrated “Revival” era is over and we’re headed into a slump era for the studio.

Edit: ok, I guess SW wasn’t quite on the level of the 00s lows critically… wow, forgot just how disastrous critical reception got for some of those films… still, a big drop off from all of the Revival era films though.

I would count Crazy Rich Asians. So that was the last one. Interesting that nobody who showed up for that showed up for Joy Ride.

As someone to showed up to both, CRA and Joy Ride are very different comedies. I think the audience who flocked to CRA.wasnt as interested in a raunchy comedy I guess.

Sometimes I forget titanic opened to under $30m

Scream 2 opened higher the prior weekend. Not a diss of course, but I find that to be a little funny.

Elemental…

”Several major markets saw uptick including Australia (+32%), Korea (+14%) and Brazil (+3%), as well as Uruguay (+127%), New Zealand (+119%), Vietnam (+41%), Chile (+40%) and Israel (+13%). Korea’s 4th weekend was the highest weekend since the film’s release; the movie seems to have taken on a mind of its own there.”

amazing stuff.

Two of my favourite films of all time opened days apart. Iconic.

This is an estimate but it shouldn't be far off. Last I saw it had grossed £707k on Friday and £1.22m on Saturday. I'd guess it'll make around £1m tomorrow for a £2.93m OW which comes to $3.76m. @UKBoxOffice will provide early estimates tomorrow in the UK box office thread most likely.

In fairness towards Encanto, think it’d have done better theatrically if it didn’t release on Plus at Christmas. Original IP and not as big IP is still very much dependent on word of mouth. I’m thinking Ralph 1 numbers for Wish currently, as I think Trolls can eat into it but I do think so long as WOM and reviews is there, it’ll find an audience.

Opened higher then Cars 3 and under the same as Lightyear, Coco, and The Good Dinosaur then, which seems about right. Thinking this will play similarly to Coco like it has in most markets.

01. Casino Royale - for me, not only the best Bond film, but also one of the best action movies of the 2000s

02. GoldenEye

03. Skyfall

04. Goldfinger

05. Licence to Kill

I think Encanto came out just a little too early. Ironically the omicron surge may have made everyone just decide to say fuck it and go back to theaters in a big way.

Wish I'm pretty bullish on, it looks cute and more traditionally "Disney" in a way that Strange World wasn't. I think this Disney 100 rerelease campaign may help its promotion as well as I'm sure the trailer will be attached to every one of those.
