The bit about the legality of the distributor dictating pricing is interesting.

I wonder if the decision to release Thursday to Sundays is about maintaining that this is a special event, rather than a normal film distribution, to get around some legalities.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Area Previews:

The Equalizer 3 (T-4):

Day: T-4 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 18 theaters 83 19 113 15100 0.75

Comps:

1.19x The Woman King- $2.03 Million

1.55x Gran Turismo- $2.17 Million

0.48x Blue Beetle- $1.58 Million

A mish-mash of not so great comps that mostly point to around 2 million at the moment.

Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (T-11):

Day: T-11 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 14 theaters 28 13 18 2978 0.6

Comps (Just Thursday):

0.82x Strays- $900k

0.72x Joy Ride- $792k

I imagine demand these last few days has been way more concentrated on National Cinema Day than both of these, so we'll see if they accelerate now.

Sooooooo I was doing my count for Taylor and thinking "huh I mean these are very good, but like nothing amazing why is BOT losing their minds over th..JABDUAHDADASDAUGEWYFIHDQ I WAS COUNTING THE WRONG DAY (the following Thursday).

Wes Anderson Reaction GIF by The Good Films

Anyways, I'm gonna have to redo all of that, so I'll check back in later this evening. Meanwhile, here are some things you probably care about way less.

Minneapolis-St.Paul Area Previews:

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (T-7):

Day: T-7 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 17 theaters 32 34 52 3501 1.49

Comps:

1.04x Strays (TOTAL): $1.14 Million

0.71x Joy Ride (TOTAL): $784k

Great jump from last update, next update will have No Hard Feelings as another comp.

The Nun II (T-7):

Day: T-7 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 17 theaters 62 51 51 11088 0.46

Comps:

0.65x Insidious: Red Door- $3.27 Million

Great start since it just went on sale (Insidious had been on sale for over a week at that point).

Lately seems like every music concert or documentary was destinated for streaming services. Swift last tour for example was a Netflix release.

After the news yesterday of Scorsese movie being a Wide release with probably months of theaters exclusive the news of the eras tour on the big screen is amazing.

The barbenheimer really Is having a big impact, It's making the live experience and theaters cool again.

Narrative around Marvel movies was "well they have their fanbases from pre pandemic", for top gun and avatar "they were very awaited and Cameron Is something by his own league when It's about watching It on a big screen"

But two originals movie being so big, so discussed and big in the pop culture really made the big screen cool again .

ngl, I wanted Exorcist to keep the old date just to see if its drop could be worse than Taylor's concert

Anyway for the exorcist imo 6th october would have been a better release date from the start.

With the announcement of Exorcist moving, our local Landmark theatre has already opened up IMAX showings for the full day all weekend instead of just the once a day showtime. I’m assuming others follow suit.
It would be ridiculous to think that with no major film opening against it this weekend that theatres would just say “nah, we’re good” and not add additional showtimes. Every weekend after it has competitors, so why wouldn’t theatres want to maximize that first weekend. AMC is the distributor, they aren’t going to restrict themselves from making money..

Between Sound of Freedom and Eras Tour, a huge year for fake movies spearheaded by the two craziest types of white women - MAGA and Swifties.

Pretty sure the venn diagram of both is a circle

As of now Eras shows are starting Friday at 6PM. So its friday previews(that too later start than most movies these days) and 2 day weekend 🙂

Here in Canada, we have showtimes starting as early as noon on Friday. I find it odd it’s not the same there.

In Canada, walkups for Equalizer are pretty solid tonight (presales weren’t great though so maybe it’s just making up for lost time). That being said, it’s encouraging, and enough for me to expect 3M tonight if not slightly more.
