I’m not sure 150m is in the cards here. It’d need 11.6x internal multiplier from 13m previews to do it. Like it’d need masssssive walkups. Is it preforming anywhere near Mario right now?

I think much of the target audience for Twisters doesn't live in places where you need to buy your ticket a month in advance to get in opening weekend

Β

Not the same genre ofc, but we saw a pattern with IO2 where the tracking spiked up as we got closer. Most people just don't want to plan that far ahead for non-superhero movies.

Β

Β

I concur. I’m not in the most bit worried that nobody has bought their Twisters ticket a month out. It’ll pick up. Β I couldn’t be more excited to see it, but I won’t buy my ticket until likely the week before.Β

Didn’t people say the same thing about The Fall Guy? I feel a lot of films in the past year were supposed to have some sort of walkups, but they just never manifested.

Β

IO2 is also a different beast, it’s only really comparable to something like Kung Fu Panda 4 ramping up at the last minute.

Β

I just don’t seeΒ whereΒ the interest, let alone excitement, is for Twisters. At least not yet. Or why we should assume a bunch of flyover state people or whatever you want to call them will show up in droves at the last minute.

I think the one thing that has been consistent, and I'm sure the tracking team can correct me if I'm wrong, is that movies that skew more white typically have bad walk-ups. Elvis, Indiana Jones, Fall Guy, Furiosa, Flower Moon. I think even Top Gun didn't really have big walk-ups.

Β

By contrast, stuff skewed more towards Black/Hispanic viewers typically have bigger walk-ups. So GxK, Equalizer, Creed, Apes, Minions, Kung Fu Panda, Inside Out, etc.

Β

So yeah. Not a great sign for Twisters, though I believe the consensus is it should still cross 40M at least, maybe even 50M. That's still fine.

Looking at the Qurom metrics for Twisters. They are not bad. It's opening much better than The Fall Guy for sure. With 5 weeks to go it def has room to go up. And yes I still think the audience it's targeting are not going to be buying tickets 5 weeks out. Does not mean they will bite in the end but the potential is there. At least for OW. After that who knows.

That's why you don't react to month-early tracking for a kids film

In fairness this was after dooming for Wish

A $50M opening for Twisters would definitely be acceptable, especially given that a definite 4 Quad Blockbuster is opening the following weekend (which means a big drop during its second frame obviously, though should be able to stabilize with the dog days of summer commencing afterwards). Anyone who would find themselves disappointed in that result has expectations that were unrealistically high in the first place.

I didn’t to want to add on since it seemed like people moved on, but that’s what I was thinking as well. POTA and BB4’s opening weekends overperformed recently, with POTA having 27% Latino and 22% Black, while BB4 had 44% Black. Twisters is expected to be the opposite of that.

Wouldn’t shock me if today’s number is closer to $50m than $40m. Sales were very strong in Indiana this morningΒ

I haven't seen Cars 2 or 3 nor do I have any interest in them

Cars 2 is pretty dreadful, but Cars 3 kinda slaps.Β  Really moving story that just because you get older doesn't mean quitting, but gives you an opportunity for something new.
