Do Pokemon movies do well at the box office in Japan?

Yes. They almost always in the yearly top 10, sometimes even top 5. These are the numbers for the last 10 movies:

2013 - ¥3.17b

2012 - ¥3.61b

2011 - ¥4.33b

2010 - ¥4.16b

2009 - ¥4.67b

2008 - ¥4.80b

2007 - ¥5.02b

2006 - ¥3.40b

2005 - ¥4.30b

2004 - ¥4.38b

I don't know what happened to the last 2 movies though. They usually make more than ¥4b. FYI, the 5th highest grossing film so far this year is Detective Conan with ¥4.05b.

It's a matter of series. Every x years, a new 'season' or 'generation' starts, and that bumps the interest for the franchise, and therefore the gross of the first film of the new 'series'. That's what happened in 2007. After that, every new film tends to drop from its predecessor, since both the kids and the people can lose their interest for every thing, even the most exciting or important one, as soon as it gets old. If I'm not mistaken, this year should see the start of a new 'series', and in that case a gross above 4B would be pretty much locked.

Ah I see. That makes sense. I'm not following Pokemon so didn't know about that.

2011 was also the start of a new series as far as the films go, but that saw only a marginal increase from 2010, despite 2011 actually being two films. Granted, X and Y (the new generation that started October 2013) were hyped like crazy given the games' first foray into 3D and the massive size of the new "Kalos" region, so maybe this one will still reach good heights.

I don't know what happened to the last 2 movies though. They usually make more than ¥4b.

2012 was the Keldeo movie I mentioned being awful, Kyurem and the Sword of Justice. Even by the dropping standards of Pokemon films, it was bad. Last year's movie was slightly better, but understandably not enough to turn things around.

Since this new Diancie movie should get a "new series boost," I'd normally expect a boost over 2013 similar to 2011's boost over 2010... so perhaps in the 3.5b range.

That said, XY was/is being hyped as a revitalization of the series, given the games' transition to 3D and the sheer size of the Kalos region, and at least in the English anime dub, they've brought back the original '98-'00 theme song -- it's that big a deal. So maybe it'll do 4b like Omni says.

At the same time, this series/generation is introducing BY FAR the least number of new Pokemon. Just over 70. Previously, the low was 100 (Johto, back in 2000), and they've had as many as 156 new Pokemon (Unova, 2010). The lack of "new" in that sense might temper things a little bit.

And Omni pretty much answered the other questions. :P  I'll be posting Pokemon and Ghibli Box-Office History data next week before they open.

I'm not following it either, but I've been following Corpse's thread on KJ for years :P

I see. I can't believe I just learned about all this, and I've been following Japan's box office for years. I only check that thread occasionally though, so apparently I've missed a lot ^_^. And thanks Ray for the explanation.

Sorry to hear about the awful Typhoon that just hit Japan, hope our members here are ok. Obviously the box-office will take a huge hit because of it.

Yeah, typhoon is always awful. I've experienced it myself once. But I think nobody here actually lives in Japan, so we're all okay in that matter.
