JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Before 2012, hollywood movies were still making money in Japan, but now, they all bomb except one or two surprises. Not expected at all. Thus Japanese market became weird.

Most Hollywood films get what they deserve in Japan, unlike the huge amounts of money they unworthily earn elsewhere.

No, there is nothing better than Hollywood movies, without them I wouldn't watch movies in the first place :)

Hollywood is fantastic and I want even more movies like they do

I'll have to go back on my earlier prediction.  After some sparse research here and there, I believe Yokai Watch will top $85 million and reach a cumulative gross of around $100 million.  Having said that, one can always think of ways in which the movie would stagger and fall down from grace, WOM being one of them.  If WOM is not that great, I'm sure Baymax will find a way to defeat this monster of a movie.  However, with so much going in for the latter, I don't think anything can stop it from at least matching Doraemon's gross.

Yokai Watch: $95 million

Big Hero 6: $55 - 60 million

Weekend Admissions (12/20-21)
Usual Locations (~1/3 of the Market)

513,688 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (NEW)
169,973 - Big Hero 6 (NEW)

44,733 (-23%) - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2)
42,651 - The Vancouver Asahi (NEW)
34,926 (-43%) - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 2)
33,056 (-48%) - The Last: Naruto the Movie (Week 3)
27,776 (-34%) - Gone Girl (Week 2)
23,552 (-42%) - Parasyte Part 1 (Week 4)
21,345 (-62%) - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2)
15,590 (-65%) - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2)

>Yo-Kai Watch ended up selling 82% of its available weekend admissions at the usual locations.

Most of the data is suggesting its weekend admissions are between 1.4-1.7 million. It's guaranteed to have opened higher than any local film before, with the record being 1.140 million admissions held by One Piece Film Z which beat Howl's Moving Castle's 8-year standing record of 1.104 million admissions two years ago.

Yo-Kai Watch needs 1.487 million to break the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Admissions. It's going to come down to how well it played at Aeon Cinemas over the weekend. They have more screens and theaters than Toho Cinema's operates now, and family/children films generally play better at Aeon than at Toho, so I'd say chances are pretty good that it's over 1.5 million admissions for the weekend, but it's not locked. *Suspense*

Projecting a gross for its opening becomes more difficult. Using Pokemon's ticket prices as a comparison, it would have earned around ¥1.4-1.6 billion over the weekend. But if we use Doraemon, then it's more like ¥1.6-1.8 billion. The difference in the avg. ticket price of Pokemon and Doraemon isn't very much, but with the amount of admissions we're talking here, it greatly changes the estimated gross for Yo-Kai Watch.

We'll know in the morning unless it's reported otherwise.

>Big Hero 6 did very well in the face of Yo-Kai Watch. However it may or may not have benefited from sellouts, it's only about 20/25% less than Frozen's opening weekend based on the admissions from the usual locations.

It's easier to project weekend figures for it with the smaller (though very impressive) numbers. Its weekend admissions should be between 425,000-475,000, for a weekend gross of about ¥550-625 million ($4.7-5.4 million). And during this time of year, that should easily net it close to ¥5 billion or more ($45 million+).

I'll post some Weekend Estimates in a little bit.

10 (05) ¥55 million ($0.47 million), -68%, ¥310 million ($2.6 million), Aikatsu! The Movie (Toei) Week 2

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan doesn't look like it will set the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Revenue thanks to its very low avg. ticket prices (overwhelming child audience), but it has the admissions to have still broken the All-Time Opening Weekend Record in Admissions based on estimates (very borderline).

And it seems very likely to have broken the All-Time Opening Weekend Record for a domestic film in revenue, and doing so in admissions is nearly a 100% lock.

I'll update the All-Time Opening Records after this post to show where the rough estimates have it ranking.

>Big Hero 6 delivered a very impressive opening. Based on estimates, it only trails Frozen (~21%) as Walt Disney Animation's biggest opening in Japan, and is higher than most of Pixar's opening in the market as well (behind Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo, Monsters University and The Incredibles).

Many films this time of year can approach multipliers of 8, 9, and 10+, and Big Hero 6 should be no different. Expect a total between ¥5-6 billion ($45-55 million) right now, which will be enough to make it Want Disney Animation's 2nd biggest film ever by edging out Dinosaur, and of course, behind Frozen.

>The Vancouver Asahi got off to a slow start, but legs will surely be strong. It'll probably earn around ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million), but a ¥2 billion hit would have been nice here.

Big Hero 6 has a very slight chance at making the Top 25 if estimates are low, but it's probably just going to miss. Not that that's bad! Its debut is very, very strong. Only one other Disney Animation film is in the Top 25 (Frozen), along with 4 Pixar films.

$5.2m OW for BH6 is fine, and second biggest Disney movie behind Frozen is nothing to be ashamed of :)

I still hope the WOM will be so good it will beat the expectations and will reach $100m :ph34r:B)

Lol. I'm fine with the 50-55M total, just in line with the predictions. But it won't help Baymax's chances of hitting 400M OS.

BH6's OW is not just fine. It's actually pretty impressive. I didn't expect it would be over 600m yen, especially against a monster hit. The crappy exchange rate makes it look less impressive. Now I'm hoping it gets at least 10x multiplier for a 6b+ total :D. But I will still be happy with 5b yen.
