JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

I mean it’s not as if they released I 2 week after,  that’s they had 1 month between them. The studio couldn’t predict how strong Joker would be, especially considering how unpredictable Japan is. 1 month should be more than enough between 2 tentpoles.

Yup, thinking that again it's already 1 month and usually SH movie legs isn't that good in Japan. Anyway, so far IT2 and Joker number looks good.

For comparison, the first IT movie made 19.3M, or 2.08 Billion Yen (correct me if I'm wrong).

Curious to see how It 2 plays out in Japan.

So far, at least until Friday 6pm on their local time. Still doing quite well. Should get at least $2m weekend.

IT2 now is #1 but will fight with local romance-drama After the Matinee for daily champ til the very end.

after trailing the two new releases by quite a margin for most of the day, Joker is doing crazy night business again. not going to catch up with the two, but the weekend prospect doesn't look too bad.

If I'd to guess, IT2 might be the more frontloaded among the top 3. A Masaharu Fukuyama starring female audience oriented drama breeds sexy legs.

btw, Joker should have insane hold today coz today isn't just another Friday, it's the monthly discount day (the 1st of every month)!

Yup you're right, 3 hours ago I wonder how come it increase from last Friday. Then I remember 1st of month discount, it should be ¥1.100 for one ticket right.

Joker last weekend avg ticket price if we divide total gross/total ticket is ¥1.496, let's round it to 1.500. So probably means 0.73 of total admission today.

Still though if we divide it means 15% hold from last Friday despite facing 2 new movies which have more seats.

in the end, IT2 won the day pretty easily, guess OL after hours are no match for horror crowd night out:)

btw, yes, WB didn't expect Joker to do this well, and so the IT2 release date; actually, WB probably consider IT2 as their winning clown since WB didn't even bother with a dubbed version for Joker.

as for IT2? just like most Hollywood studio flicks...

It's pretty safe to assume WB thought IT 2 would make a lot more money than Joker, not only in Japan but worldwide. But that's life.

yeah, I know, and that's why I love about Joker's OS run, especially so in Japan. it did it the old school way, the wom, not hype, and against virtually anyone's, including its own studio, expectation, just clicked with the audiences.

anyway, Joker's Friday admission isn't far behind After the  Matinee. If IT2 shows any sign of frontloadness, Joker still has a (n outside) shot at weekend crown.

From Corpse:

Apologies for not getting to the Weekend Forecast today.

It: Chapter Two will likely debut at #1, but its opening doesn't look to be particularly impressive, especially given the good reception of the first film (and how leggy it was). It's aiming for ¥200-250 million ($2-2.5 million) over the weekend, which isn't much higher than its predecessor's ¥184.5 million opening. And matching the legs of the original is very unlikely, so it's probably safe to call a lower total for Chapter Two.

Joker, in its fifth weekend, and the debut of After the Matinee will be in a close race for second place. I'm expecting a split here, with Joker coming in second in revenue, while After the Matinee edges out a second place opening in admissions. Both are likely headed for ¥175 million ($1.6 million) or so.

When will the presale for Frozen 2 start in Japan?

Is there anyone from Japan here. I dont know Japan starts PS this early. Showtimes are finalized only in the week of release considering its a leggy market. Plus mimiron does not report PS so I dont know how we can get the data.

if you have KJ account you should pop this question to @Corpse. Or let us hope he comes into this thread to respond.

Corpse:

Terminator Box-Office History

Opening Weekends:
¥1.097 billion ($9.5 million) / 786,000 - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
>W/Previews: ¥1.456 billion ($12.6 million) / 1,043,267
¥592.1 million ($6.1 million) / 461,866 - Terminator: Salvation (2009)
>W/Previews: ¥1.021 billion ($10.6 million) / 799,653
¥515.7 million ($4.2 million) / 352,718 - Terminator: Genisys (2015)

Totals:
¥8.79 billion ($49.6 million) / 6.46 million - Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) #1 OS Market
¥8.20 billion ($67.9 million) / 6.00 million - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) #1 OS Market
¥3.32 billion ($33.9 million) / 2.60 million - Terminator: Salvation (2009) #1 OS Market
¥2.74 billion ($22.0 million) / 1.91 million - Terminator: Genisys (2015) #2 OS Market

The Terminator (1985) earned less than ¥1 billion in distributor income when it was released, so it wasn't an initial success at the box-office (probably even considered a disappointment) and its gross is unknown. But it clearly gained a following (presumably on home video) given just how huge Terminator 2: Judgement Day was. T2 is still the 58th highest grossing film ever in Japan after almost 30 years; and T3 also ranks well as the 65th highest grossing film.

Terminator: Dark Fate debuts this weekend, so let's see if it can be more of a return to form for the franchise in the market. Japan has been the franchise's top OS market (well, 2nd for Genisys), but it's dropped off a lot. It's not going to suddenly jump back to T2 or T3 numbers, but surpassing Genisys and Salvation would be a nice accomplishment and it's not unreasonable.

Terminator: Dark Fate appears to be bringing back in some of the old franchise fans, having opened somewhere around 25/30% higher than Terminator: Genisys on Friday, and it seems poised for an even better improvement on Saturday based on pre-sales. But not only does it seem very, very likely to open higher than Genisys, it also looks good to either match or beat the opening weekend of Terminator: Salvation by a bit as long as Sunday delivers.

I've been expecting a better debut for Dark Fate, and these numbers are pretty impressive, suggesting a ¥600/700 million opening weekend. So it looks likely to open higher than Salvation as well (in gross). Even if it does end up being as frontloaded as the previous two entries, it has a good chance of reaching ¥3.5/¥4 billion ($30-35 million) with a ¥600/700 million opening.
