JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

There is a huge difference in Cinema viewing pre and post 90s, a difference will come in some years due to OTT.

So admissions record of different don't make a sense at all. GWTW may have got 200mn admissions, or not, it will struggle to get even half of that today, not due to change in taste of public but movie viewing alternative.

yeah,Ben hur did really good in Japan

Ben-Hur gross over JPY 590m in 1960,and hit another JPY 900m in 1961,total gross JPY 1490m( Tokyo Olimpiad box office:1220m ,),and it become highest grossing film in Japan at that time, holding record for 14 years.(beaten by Bruce Lee's movie"Enter the Dragon")

top grossing film by year in Japan(1960-1969)

1960:Ben Hur-590m

1961:Ben Hur-900m

1962:West side story-690m

1963:Lawrence of Arabia-590m

1964: Tokyo Olimpiad-1220m

1965:James Bond-Goldfinger-706m

1966:James Bond-Thunder ball-1018m

1967:くろべのたいよう-796m

1968:ふうりんかざん-720m

1969:栄光への5000キロ-650m

Hmm interesting & useful data if this is true ... Ben Hur was like Hurricane in Japan but really never thoughts of this kind of response . 30 M+ admissions means All time record by a fair margin .. 😮

What are the thoughts for F2 OW?

$10m Fri/Sat $13m 3 day if it gets the seats or similar to F1'S OW? $7.5m/9.7m

F1's XR was 6% stronger 102.5Y to $ vs 108.6 today

We have seen Big weekend this year. TS4, Endgame cleared 13mn. I am expecting a bumper start considering how big was Frozen. One of the or the Biggest opening of all time

Finally Frozen 2 screenings are avaliable on TOHO site.

In Toho Cinemas Shibuya, in which F1 was always soldout, it seems F2 gets more daily screenings:

6 shows for dubbed version (300 seats)

5 shows for subbed version (240 seats)

Presales are not yet avaliable.

>Terminator: Dark Fate repeats atop the weekend box-office, delivering a fair second weekend hold, selling a further 205,317 admissions. After ten days in release, the sixth-entry in the Terminator franchise has sold 956,091 admissions. It remains on track for a total between ¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million), likely finishing on the low-end of that range.

>It: Chapter Two continues to have excellent holds, and like its predecessor, may end up legging its way across the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone once again.

>Sumikko Gurashi: The Pop-Up Book and the Mystery Child enjoyed a marvelous second weekend increase to rise into the Top 3. There are limited special fan screenings going on in Tokyo, which reportedly sold out after just 5 minutes of going on sale prior to the weekend. These screenings likely won't last long (may already be over), but they were certainly a huge success.

>Joker comes in fourth place in its seventh weekend of release. It has slowed slightly, and reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion will probably come down to how long Warner Bros. keeps it playing. That said, even if it does barely miss the mark, it wasn't expected to come anywhere near this level of success (half as much would have been considered great), so win-win all around.

This upcoming weekend sees the release of Frozen 2. What to expect from the sequel to the third-highest grossing of all-time in Japan? I'll be providing in-depth tracking (hourly updates) over the weekend.

Frozen 2 pre-sales are a little on the low side of what I would have expected; however, it's pretty clear that most moviegoers are likely to just wait until Saturday/Sunday instead or rushing out to see it on Friday based on current ticket sales.

I'm not getting the feeling it's going to have a huge, record-breaking opening weekend, but it's still looking strong right now in my opinion. It's important to remember that Japan is a backloaded market, so we often have to play the waiting game to determine success.

It's important to note that Toy Story 4's massive opening had the help of a holiday. Its Friday might also have been a little larger than usual due to the upcoming summer vacation.

Could Frozen 2 beat out the biggest Opening Weekend in Japan: Revenge Of The Sith (18.9M)?

That would need ¥2B. For 3 days, maybe, but unlikely. And for traditional 2-day OW, I don't think theaters in Japan have that kind of capacity. That number for ROTS is recorded as its "2-day" OW. But if I remember correctly, it actually includes previews on the previous weeks. The same with other biggest openers like Matrix Reloaded. It makes me wondering, what movie has the biggest OW without previews?
