Besson covered his ass financially, he s no fool, the movie was pre-sold to foreign distributors.

It was his life long dream to adapt Valerian, it s really a passion project for him.

Did Lucy lose money? I was under the impression that it made bank. $464M WW on a $40M budget, no? I didn't include the marketing costs though but even still.

Of course it did money.

Universal asked Besson for a sequel and Lucy is the reason Valerian could be made in the first place.

Besson explained Lucy s success opened a window with investors and he took advantage of it to do his lifelong dream project.

I'm sure this will be great and a burst of creative sci-fi juice that we desperately need lately...  If you've seen Fifth Element, Lucy, Leon, The Big Blue, La Femme Nikita... you should know that Luc Besson is a phenomenal filmmaker.  Looking forward to this.
