I went to Lincoln Square(2nd highest grossing theater NYC) and people loved Taken 2. People thought that it was just like Taken 1. Which isn't a bad thing to most.

You cannot be sure whether the reviews affected its box office run or the public just hated the movie and bad WOM affected its chances.

I didn't have any issues with the film outside of the cuts made to the final few fights. They made the main fight confusing at the end. Apart from that it delivered for me.

But who's to say initial WOM didn't develop from great/terrible reviews? At that level it's hard to differentiate, and a small film would definitely be worried if its reviews sucked.
