China Box Office Thread | Oppenheimer-August 30

Recommended Posts

Watched JW, pretty full for a midnight show.

Decent movie, good CGI and action scenes but chemistry between human characters is a bit underwhelming.

A lot of homage to the original movie.

Wednesday prediction: JW - 110M, SA 17M

Is better than TLW?

Quite good? That's awesome! Firedeep said the opposite earlier.

Same reason I decided to leave the JW thread until after I see it - people clinging to some early review that goes along with what they already believe, and make it sound like that's the overall consensus.

SA down 52% 10:30. Now that I think of it, SA sells 20% more tix in the evening than AOU and FF7. Perhaps the drop will be less in the evening since its skewing older. down 40-45% could happen

JW looking like 100m +/-5m with midnights so far, again this could change a bit.10:30 is often 1/3 of the day and Im basing it on that, however OD can deviate.. 14:00-14:30 should be the halfway point of the day. we'll see how things look then.

Kung Fu Panda 3 setting itself up to break records: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-china-dreamworks-20150609-story.html#page=1

The creation of Oriental DreamWorks has already resulted in preferential treatment for "Kung Fu Panda 3" in China. The movie's recent designation as co-production will allow the company to receive a larger share of revenue than foreign studios typically receive when their films are allowed into China under its quota system.

And the movie has secured a choice release date over the Chinese New Year holiday, a period typically reserved for domestic productions.

The movie is breaking new ground by having two versions, in which characters are animated so that their speech is in sync with both English and Mandarin. To create the Mandarin-language version will take about 25% more time and effort, adding to the budget of the film that's estimated near $140 million.

"The first few projects that we do are going to take longer and they're going to be potentially more expensive than what we would normally be planning to do," said Prashant Buyyala, head of Oriental DreamWorks' animation studio. "But that's all part of the process of building a world-class animation studio."

midnights are not good for uber blockbuster. But if WOM is good it will have good holds over the week which is more important than the midnights. OD definitely looks like 100m yuan+. If it can do 120m it will be excellent and movie can do close to 700m for the 5-day weekend.

Gewara rating went from 9.1 yesterday to 8.6 today. Not sure how representative Gewara is though.
