what exactly has happened to superhero movies in China? they seem to have plateaued, while other types of US movies can still score much higher (eg Pirates, Kong, Transformers, Fast and FUrious, XXX, Coco)

 

This year, all these are sequels:

 

Spiderman : 116M

GOTG 2: 101M

Thor 3: 112M

Justice League: 104M

Logan: 106M

The most likely reason: there are only this many audiences in China for superhero movies.

To be fair its a later start. Dunkirk had 10k+ shows by Saturday and pushed over 1m on Monday. SW8 just got over 10k today to 13800. So this is the real start point for PS. At 750k and will make its way over 1m tomorrow.  The question is will it run below a 20% daily increase rate or 30%+ thru sunday.

here's a possible scenario

1m wed early morning, then 1.5m on thursday as the rollout slows. Then;

1.5m x1.25Thx1.25x1.25x1.25x1.3x1.4x1.5x1.9= 19m in PS x 4 =76m OD 228m OW 420m total

That's not a prediction, just a model. Lets see if it can hold above it. We could see 30% increases thru sunday,  Tues and wed could be 60% increases and the final day could be 105%.  Finally the PS multi could be 4.5 as all this has happened with a few releases lately and taking OD over 100m

Ouch, so SW8 is shaping up to be a trainwreck in China, not just down from TFA which was given but a trainwreck.

Not sure whether deadpool 2 will release in China. First one did not screen there.
