Of course that’s not going to be reflected in direct viewership of S8, but it still has brutal implications for the shows legacy in $$ and culture. There is absolutely no proof of that, everything points to the opposite: DVD sales, GoogleTrends, those ParrotAnalytics dubious 'audience demand' rankings... One year after the last season, it is still in the top 10 'Most Popular' on IMDb! (while some recent GoT wannabes are falling fast after a few months with no new episode, like normal series do). Again, the tiny minority kept predicting doom and nitpicking everything for the last seasons, but the show only got more popular until it dominated absolutely everything else on TV. You can't ignore ratings if you want to argue that a show lost fans, especially when talking about the TV phenomenon of the last decade: GoT could lose all the casuals and still have more fans than almost any other serialized drama - including those currently airing. But yes this is of course impressive (specially for cable):

The small minority of angry viewers who jumped late on the GoT bandwagon and expected a heroic happy ending has been proven irrelevant for what matters to HBO, ratings. did we watch the same show? as far as main characters go, the finale of GoT was the definition of a happy ending. (good guys get what they want, bad guys die) all the starks got what they wanted. the morally grey lannisters (jaime & cersei) died while Tyrion lived and is now the hand of the king. they didn't have the guts to show us that bran is no longer there and the king now is actually the 3 eyed raven, instead they made it about that he has a "great story to tell" or w/e. the whole council scene was comical and it was even more embarrassing for Dany's character, they could've given her a heroic death fighting the white walkers or she dies trying to defeat cersei which would've been at least a bittersweet ending. but nope, they instead bluntly turned her into a faceless nazi villain so you can't even feel sorry for her death. I didn't really get much sadness vibes from the ending, it was quite uplifting for GoT standards. Edited May 5, 2020 by RealLyre .

filmlover
Can anyone blame GRRM for moving on to other projects and never finishing the books after seeing how violently negative the reaction to the final season was (and continues to be)? Maybe one day he'll reveal how he would've ended the story even if he never actually completes the series.

He's gone on record confirming some things that were the same between his ending and the show, and some things that the show changed. But the show faceplanting doesn't excuse his laziness. He's had 10 years now to write book 6.
