Opinions on the MPAA rating system

Recommended Posts

The stupid 1 "fuck" rule is what prevented Hugh Jackman's Wolverine cameo in XM: FC to be more awesome. He should have been allowed to say a few more  :P  :D

That was still pretty funny. I'd rather he didn't go overboard with like 5 f-bombs since it'd ruin the joke.

Considering the language I hear at school (I counted 60 f-bombs by a group of kids on my bus), what's "appropriate for children" is pretty much the same as adults :P

Yeah, I know. That cameo is funny and effective. I was just kidding ;) Though it's messed up of the system when if he had said one more "fuck", the rating would change.

The actual rule is more than 3 f-bombs, no sexual use intended.

And you can use "motherf--ker" in a PG-13 film.

America should be more like Europe.

Lol, European movies(which I've been watching a lot more of lately) are definitely more ballsy. I just saw Daisy Diamond with Noomi Rapace for the first time, and shes naked and having very graphic sex scenes for like most of the movie.  Theres no fucking way that movie wouldn't have gotten an NC-17 in the US.

Stuff like this isn't that uncommon in Europe.

My problem w/ the movies only getting to say fuck once is that sometimes it feels like they're just kinda forcing it to be an "edgy" pg13. Like when I watch a PG-13 and someone says fuck once it takes me out the film for a second, but compare it to a film like End of Watch which uses the word 326 times (srsly, look it up) and it doesn't really bother me at all.

Get rid of it entirely, any child could see hardcore graphic porn on the internet if they want to anyway, so stopping people from seeing films because of much milder things is just silly.

That's not a fair comparison. I agree the ratings are stupid and arbitrary, but the general point of them is supposed to be so parents can determine if they want their kids to see a particular movie. It's harder for parents to control internet, unless they look over their shoulders the entire time.

There seems to be a general push towards the "middle" these days. I remember Ang Lee saying the studio demanded someone say "damn" so Sense and Sensibility wouldn't be given a G rating. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs also had a gratuitous "damn".

There's a really nice documentary about the MPAA, it's called This Film Is Not Yet Rated. It shows a number of directors who had a really hard time cutting scenes from their movies in order to get a R rating, because a NC-17 just kills your marketing opportunities and most cinema chains won't even show it. There are other issues discussed in the movie: The MPAA members are anonymous, sometimes members of the church help deciding the ratings, gay sex scenes and female sexual depictions usually get higher ratings... Even Blue Valentine almost got a NC-17. And this part (Careful, NSFW http://youtu.be/ZT5l_mGIcTA?t=26s)of the movie shows different ratings given to movies with gay sex scenes.

Also, the Fuck rule is retarded.

I think its grotesque that Amelie and Hostel have the same age rating

This.

It really shows how twisted those MPAA people really are.

They are probably closet perverts.

Yep, it's basically required viewing.
