Valentine's Day 2017 Numbers - 50SD - 11.5M, LBM 5.5, JW2 4.9 (the whispers of Asgard)

The sales reports seemed to indicate a higher number for Fifty Shades but I think it's just that the audience for these movies mostly likes to buy their tickets online just to remain as anonymous as possible short of showing up to the theater wearing trench coats and sunglasses. lol.

Trying again on a fresh post.

Here are the top VD numbers going back to 2004 - before that the numbers are inconsequential and not over the 10M mark - Shades should be #10 unless the deadline estimate is too low.

Top Valentines Day Grosses

42.59  Deadpool SUNDAY

36.75  50SoG   Saturday

23.39  Valentines Day SUNDAY

19.75  50 First Dates SATURDAY

14.29  Friday the 13th SATURDAY

12.87  About Last Night FRIDAY

12.79  The Lego Movie  FRIDAY

11.55  The Vow TUESDAY

11.09  The Wolfman SUNDAY

This going back to 2004 - BOM is being stupid at letting me look farther back. While we want to say that 50SD will have a big Tuesday history is very much against that assumption. If it opens anywhere close to the VOW (40m OW as some are suggesting) it isn't cracking the top 5 on the list let alone higher than 11m.

So if by some miracle Shades behaves like The Vow the rest of its run (not going to happen) it loses it's gross lead by next Wednesday and The Vow never looks back. Shades will cross 100m - but no more than 110m Max and I think a gross between 102-105m is more likely.

I'm with Baumer. 50SD is going to do around 400-450 WW off a 55 production budget. Universal is doing backflips at that profit margin, just like they did when they dropped the first one. Somewhat related note: all those think pieces about how we never get mid-range stuff for adults anymore? We had two dropped this weekend and both are going to be very successful for their studios (50SD and JW2)

not great for 50 Shades

I've never read a think piece saying we need more shitty movies like 50 Shades of Porn. I've read plenty saying we need more "mid-budget adult dramas," but 50 Shades is not an adult drama. It's a women-skewing piece of trash filmmaking that most people would be embarrassed to admit to watching.

My first thought seeing these numbers was they all seemed great to me, big increases across the board, for everything, even Rogue One got a huge bump which I didn't really expect because it has been out so long. I guess just moviegoing in general is a big deal on V-Day. Personally, I'm very happy I don't have a girlfriend whose taste in movies is so shitty I get dragged to The Vow or 50 Shades. That would be a deal breaker for me. We went and saw John Wick 2, after watching Deadpool again at home on 4K Blu-ray (she only saw it in theaters a year ago, I've seen it 4 times now lol) and catching up on The Walking Dead, so it was a great V-Day. I loved John Wick 2, it was incredible. I knew I would love the action, but what I really was most blown away by was the cinematography and the locations. Whoever did the location scouting and chose those incredible places to film did an amazing job because it really underscores how important it is to have something beautiful to SHOOT when you have a movie. It's the difference sometimes between a merely good scene and a great one. The lighting throughout was incredible. I hope none of that counts as "spoilers," I tried to keep it non-specific as hell, but suffice to say I was impressed.

I'm on the fence for whether I should go see The Great Wall this weekend, I mean, it'll probably be pretty lame, maybe it would be fun in IMAX, but it feels like a skippable film to say the least.

People like the movies, the movies are profitable, so they're gonna make more of them.  Simple as that.

I mean, I hate to be the hair splitter, but 50SD is a romance-drama budgeted at 55 million and rated R. That's the definition of mid-budget adult-aimed drama. You can hate the movie and think it's terrible, but that doesn't make it a different TYPE of movie. You can say you want "Good" versions of that type of movie, but I long ago learned not to try and foist my definition of taste as definitive. People dig what they dig, and studios make the movies that make money. This is the version of that type of movie that makes money (based on a pre-existing property, female-skewing [because women like to go to movies too and have stuff that isn't just dudes getting shot in the face]). And hey, if you want a version that might be more your boat, Hidden Figures and La La Land's runs say what up.
