if they had done a quick 3D conversion for LR then it could have opened closer to 20m. I don't know why they didn't

Probably didn't want to put anymore money in it.

The Fourth doesn't strike me as a monster movie-going day. I think things stay relatively flat or drop.

The 4th is by far the most erratic Holiday when it comes to increases/drops, probably because people's plans are often directly tied to the weather.

In that case...

Rango was in 2D also. Different studio, but same director! It was the last major CGI film not to be in 3D.

The only 3D films I really like are animated ones.

how do you copy the chart like that? Also like I pointed out, the action oriented films went up at that time but the other films went down

It's kind of refreshing to have a film only in 2D

Yep-the studios that do it the least seem to be Fox and Universal. (Where as WB is still one of the worse-whoever thought Gatsby should be in 3D was crazy)

So why do studios release their movies on the day before?

Here are some reasons.

1. 4th is a Holiday most people have it off. The day before is like a Friday night.

2. Some companies might have the day before Independence day off.

3. People use vacation time to have a long weekend so they might take the day before Independence day off.

Here are some reasons.

1. 4th is a Holiday most people have it off. The day before is like a Friday night.

2. Some companies might have the day before Independence day off.

3. People use action time to have a long weekend so they might take the day before Independence day off.

Some also take the day after off as well, especially when the 4th lands on Thursday.

Plus, the earlier a movie opens, the larger share of box office receipts the studio gets. Instead of a normal 3-day opener, they get five full days of their highest gross cut.
