I think the first film is a hidden gem that strongly portrayed what it means to be a family. This one manages to exceed its predecessor in every way. I'm just gobsmacked by how powerful this film is. Behind the deliriously intelligent humor lies a deeply moral tale about the trial and heartache families suffer during summer vacations. You can't help but feel sad when the family is forced to stay indoors because of the weather (the mood and atmosphere are beautifully emphasized by the falling rain, and fluttering blue curtains - which clearly depict how melancholy this film can be). Say what you want about Adam Sandler, but the reason he's popular is because his films strike an unusually strong emotional chord with audiences that is bizarrely rejected by the Internet community. Will probably end up being one of the best films of the year.

A+

The first Grown Ups was sweet.  It had a lot of what Noctis talks about in his review.  Family values, friendship, appreciating what you have and not taking it for granted.  It was also insanely funny and it struck a chord with all age groups and perhaps even all races.  It was one of my faves from 2010.

Grown Ups 2 is the complete antithesis of the first.  It's mean, misogynistic, unfunny and littered with so many idiotic characters and stupid scenes that go nowhere.  There is nothing sweet about this film.  The first one had a beautiful setting at Sandler's cottage.  There they reminisce about old times and their youth and they teach their kids family values.  In this film, women are made to bend over and show ass, cleavage is rampant and every wife is sexualized in some way.  Then you have a grade 4 girls dance teacher that looks more like a porno star than she does a dancer and this is the woman who teaches 8 year old kids to dance.

Then you have an on going theme where Kevin James (who looks like he ate his character from Here Come's The Boom.  He looks about 100 pounds heavier) can burp, sneeze and fart all at the same time.  He does this about 17 different times and then the film ends with Sandler about to have sex with his wife, but instead he burp/sneeze/farts and this is supposed to be funny.

Nick Swardson role in this is to do about the most unfunny things you can possibly imagine.  There isn't one scene he has that is remotely funny.  Tim Meadows and his family make annoying shrieks and his kid is the most ridiculously written character in the film as he plays a 12 year old kid who thinks he is a rapper and does nothing but talk in rhyme.

When the two best performances in the film are Stone Cold Steve Austin and Jacob from Twilight, you know your film is in trouble.  Milo Ventimiglia was decent too as one of Lautner's frat friends.  But these are minor characters.  The rest of the film is just shit.  I love Sandler's films for the most part but he is on a serious, serious downswing.  His last three films (not including Hotel Transylvania) were complete garbage.  This is better than That's My Boy and on the same level of crapness as Jack and Jill.  Even the 80's party, while fun to look at, was ridiculous.  In a matter of 4 hours the entire town manages to find 80's costumes that range for an orange leather jacket (Michael Jackson) to Prince's purple threads to a vintage Smurf's outfit.  It's just bad writing and bad producing.

4/10

I can't remember a time when Nick Swardson was funny

I agree for the most part but I thought he was fantastic in Just Go With it.  The sheep resusitation scene especially.

baumer's just another critic with a stick up his butt. Sorry that GU2 didn't have thematic symbolism or gorgeous cinematography. Why can't you just ENJOY movies, man?

Sweet Jesus, his shtick is so worn-out at his point.

I have a soft spot for Grandmas Boy.

I had a pair of roommates who swore by that movie. I got high with them and sat down to watch it. Despite the weed, I couldn't understand why the hell they liked it. Acquired taste, I suppose.

Not backtrack, but I always felt the first one treated women in the same way. Oh, and they joke about the "ugly" woman who looks like a man and they all chuckle about to it each other. Do they all chuckle together at the end of every scene in this one?

There's still a fair share of that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with laughing at their own jokes (Porky's did this very well).  But the jokes have to be funny.  In here, imo, they are not.
