Asuming we have to choose between nominees, this is my list. I will only post years that I do not agree with final result (I do not have enough criteria to choose in most of 20s and 30s):

1939 - Stagecoach

1940 - I am fine with Rebecca, but both The Great Dictator or The grapes of Wrath deserved too.

1941 - Citizen Kane

1944 - Double Indemnity

1950 - Sunset Boulevard

1951 - A streetcar named desire

1952 - The quiet man

1955 - Picnic

1957 - 12 angry men (although I love The Bridge on the River Kwai too, real winner)

1961 - Judgement at Nuremberg

1962 - To kill a mockingbird

1967 - The graduate

1969 - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

1976 - Taxi Driver

1977 - Star Wars

1980 - Raging Bull

1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark

1982 - E.T. The Extraterrestrial (although if Tootsie had won I would not have bothered)

1990 - Goodfellas

1994 - The Shawshank Redemption

1996 - Fargo

1997 - L.A. Confidential (for me Titanic is behind of As good as it gets and Good Will Hunting too)

1998 - Saving private Ryan

1999 - The insider

2001 - The Fellowship of the Ring

2002 - The Two Towers

2004 - Sideways (I like Million Dollar Baby, but I love this movie)

2005 - Good night, and good luck

2006 - Little Miss Sunshine

2009 - Up

2010 - Inception

If we can choice any movie of the year, then I should think about it more...

rather than trying to pick between no country for old men and there will be blood, i'll just post whether i agree or disagree with the academy's designation of these films as great

1927 sunrise: a song of two humans

1930 all quiet on the western front

1942 casablanca

1957 the bridge on the river kwai

1965 the sound of music (polanski's repulsion)

1973 the sting (if foreign language films are allowed, la nuit americaine. haven't seen anything else from this year)

1994 forrest gump (seen nothing great from this year)

1997 titanic (nor from this year, in fact titanic is the best i've seen)

1999 american beauty

2000 gladiator  (dancer in the dark)

2001 a beautiful mind (moulin rouge!)

2003 lord of the rings: return of the king (dogville)

2007 no country for old men

2008 slumdog millionaire (yep, the dark knight is better than this)

2010 the king's speech (black swan or social network would've been acceptable)

The Exorcist is the best from 1973 but I've never seen The Sting.

Disagree on Dogville though - no matter how good it was, LOTR deserved BP for one of the films.

1994 has Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, and The Lion King - a near perfect quartet (haven't seen Pulp Fiction but people say it's amazing) I definitely consider 1994 one of my favorite film years because of these.

You must see The Sting. Maybe your opinion about 1973 would change. It is an amazing and extremely entertaining film. Just unforgettable.

Yeah I haven't seen that, Sleeper or Enter the Dragon so I can't accurately say what's the absolute best. But The Exorcist made you forget it was a horror movie and Linda Blair should have gotten a Supporting Actress Oscar.

I do want to see The Sting but it's never on TV and they took it off instant Netflix a few months ago  :(

All right...

2008: The Dark Knight

2009: Up

2010: The Social Network

Midnight in Paris shouldn't have won either. Clearly you're letting you Pixar fanboy get the better of you when you simply replace Wall E winning to Up winning. None of them deserved to win.

FROM NOMINEES ONLY

1990: Dances (they made the right choice, IMHO)

1991: Silence of the Lambs (right choice also)

1992: Unforgiven (right choice)

1993: Schindler's List (they got it right - pretty good year)

1994: Forrest Gump or Shawshank (I really don't get the PF praise)

1995: Braveheart! (they got it right. I love also A13 and S&S)

1996: Fargo (that's so obvious now that it hurts)

1997: Titanic (a piece of film history, impossible not to reward it; poor LA Confidential)

1998: Saving Private Ryan (WTF were they thinking?)

1999: American Beauty (Magnolia would have been a great winner also)

Two differing opinions in the 90's

2000: Traffic (it had a huge impact on me. Gladiator was a nice choice also)

2001: FOTR (I felt sooooo embarrassed. I liked A Beautiful Mind, but... come on!)

2002: Chicago (so much fun, but The Pianist was a close runner-up)

2003: Return of the King (obvious winner)

2004: Sideways (a little gem)

2005: Brokeback Mountain (but I don't get the Crash winning hate)

2006: The Departed (but it really should have won Children of Men)

2007: There Will be Blood (it's so good that you can see it countless times despite barely having any likeable character)

2008: Frost/Nixon (but it really should habe been  Wall-E. Slumdog is the worst film in the last 25 years to be honored)

2009: The Hurt Locker (it really grows as the time passes)

Six years with changes in the 00's

2010: Inception (but it's difficult to pick between King's Speech, TS3 and Black Swan)

2011: The Artist (I love it, they got it right)

2012: Life of Pi, Les Miserables or Silver Linings Playbook (can't believe Argo won against such brilliant films)

2013: Gravity (12YAS in a close second place. Have yet to see some of the nominees)

Only one year with my favourite film winning

Slumdog is LEAGUES better than Crash. Also, it should have been The Dark Knight and not Wall-E as that is easily the more influential movie.

I also can't feel for Fargo losing in an obviously weak year where it should have won because the Coens can be so horribly condescending to small towners in their movies. Fargo being no exception. Fuck, the treatment of the Jean Lundegaard character is so shitty.

But otherwise I agree with all those choices. :)

Edit: Oh wait, I didn't see the PF diss! :P And Moulin Rouge! over ABM.

I'll do everything from 1990 on, as I feel that those are the years where I know the breadth of the nominees and worthy films best. I also assume we're limiting the list to the films that were nominated for Best Picture.

1991: Beauty and the Beast

1992: The Crying Game

1993: Schindler's List*

1994: Pulp Fiction

1995: Apollo 13

1996: Fargo

1997: Titanic*

1998: Saving Private Ryan

1999: American Beauty*

2000: Traffic

2001: Moulin Rouge!

2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King*

2004: Million Dollar Baby*

2005: Munich

2006: The Departed*

2007: There Will Be Blood

2008: Slumdog Millionaire*

2009: Avatar

2010: The Social Network

2011: The Tree of Life (I'm still stunned that this one squeaked in)

2012: Silver Linings Playbook

2013: Gravity
