It was greenlit by the previous regime at WB so I guess by the time the new regime came in, it was already in production so they couldn't do anything about it. Even given that this is a film that was aimed at families (though I agree that some of the dark stuff in this film does not scream family film),and those generally have not very good Thursday nights, this was a not very good opening.
