Gravity is a deserving winner for Editing because it showed how you could have great editing when in some places you don't edit at all for like 15 minutes.

 

But Captain Phillips also was deserving because of how slowly but steadily it built tension and occasionally burst into frenetic adrenaline. The roll-up to the take-down shot was almost unbearably taut.

People try to say it does but but not really. It's more you have to be nominated to win BP.

Yes. However, it does look good for gravity because gravity is a non-traditional editing job vs. something like Captain Phillips, which usually is the type of thing that wins. So it means that they are in love with it.
