Even with Avatar sequels potentially slotted at these given dates, I don't see the other studios ceding the dates to Avatar completely. These movies don't seem like the sort which will open huge, instead they will do the Cameron thing of a modest opening followed by great legs through the holidays.

You can't say that yet. It could work.

 

Think of each Avatar movie as one full season of a TV show. Most TV shows' sweet spots end in the 5-6 season range. In essence, James Cameron is extending the shelf life of Avatar's potential. That is what I'm taking away from the announcement anyway.
