Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman.

This movie is the production equivalent of a Ponzi scheme. "Yea, it's coming out in 2012/2014/2017/2018/2020!" Continued promises with no actionable proof of real results.

It was like this before about six months ago, but now we have multiple sources confirming a production start timetable and we also have Box Office Mojo actually putting on their schedule for the first time, so despite the way things have looked I think they are actually moving now.

I think there are three main obstacles to movies getting made: not having a script everyone likes, not having major talent attached, and not having funding. These have all three (and they've basically had all three for awhile, the hold-up being Cameron wanting to keep working away on the scripts).

The only way this film isn't made, I hate to say it, is if Jim gets in an accident.

This film is happening guys.

It also shouldn't take this long to make a sequel either..

Cameron has been busy, you make it sound like he's been working on Avatar solely for the last 8 years. That's not the case, after all he lead a crew of engineers to design and make a deep sea exploration sub and piloted it himself to the deepest point in the ocean and saw the ground with his own eyes which is a feat no one had every done before. (The french guys had technical problems and couldn't see the floor bed)

He's not, he's making four of them. :P

That distinction is important, Peter Jackson started Lords of the Rings in 1995, and the story already existed, it is normal for 4 giant blockbuster pushing boundary to take a long pre-production time. He finished the dvd release of the last Hobbit in like april 2015, 20 year's later.

cameron began the development of first avatar in 1994, to be released in 1999. But he said, na man! not enough technology to bring this dream come true. Then he again started in 2005 and released it in 2009. At that time the highest grossing movie WW  was another cameron's masterpiece titanic with 1.8 billion.

SECOND WAS ROTK WITH 1.1 BILLION. YES!! THAT'S RIGHT, 700 MILLION DIFFERENCE. NO MOVIE EVEN COME CLOSE TO TITANIC IN 12 YEARS.

MANY SAID AVATAR WILL FLOP, SOME SAID 1 BILLION. BUT IT MADE JOKE OF ALL OF THIS PREDICTION AND DID 1 BILLION MORE THAN TITANIC.

8 YEARS LATER, AND THERE IS STILL NO MOVIE EVEN CLOSE TO AVATAR, NOT STAR WARS, NOT AVENGERS. ACTUALLY THE CLOSEST IS CAMERON'S TITANIC WITH THE DIFFERENCE OF 600 MILLION.

NOW, AGAIN HE MUST HAVE PLANNED SOMETHING EXTRA-ORDINARY, SOMETHING GROUNDBREAKING WITH THIS SEQUELS. AVATAR IS BACK TO TEACH OTHER PUNY BLOCKBUSTERS HOW IT IS DONE.

Yeah.. Sure.. Some time after 2020 when most people will have moved on and stopped caring and the only groundbreaking technology Cameron is going to have to create to outdo 3D is Smell-O-Vision with this movie and that's not likely.. I feel like with each day that passes, this whole thing is nothing more than a smokescreen.. See you in 3 Years if were all still alive..

Fine, but after titanic and avatar, it's stupid to neglect any james cameron project.

China + US alone could cross 1b.

Considering A1's 200 2009 gross in China and how much that market could grow by 2020, 400-500 isn't an unreasonable projection for A2.

So 1b from China + US is very likely even if it under-performs dom.

If Avatar 2 keeps the same market share as the original, it would make $1 billion alone in China by 2020. Unlikely but I don't want to say impossible either. A more reasonable prediction would probably be $600-700 million, as I don't see how it doesn't at least become the highest grossing film in China again. A few years ago, Cameron was in China discussing a possible co-production with Chinese studios. If this happens, will likely gain some additional benefits like better release date, screen retention, extended run.
