The word of mouth on this re-release has been overwhelmingly positive, this bodes very well for Way of Water. The w o m on the clip well...nothing short of 5 stars across the board, I think this will be the must see movie event of 2022-23.

Not so surprise how great the reactions are. Last year Chinese audience really enjoyed the original version re-release. Actually, Avatar went up from 8.7 to 8.8 on Douban. Many noticed Jim is so good at visual storytelling. Some even said they cried when the home tree was destroyed. Nobody can refuse an eye contact porn.

Anyone who has seen the remaster in Dolby and in IMAX know how noticeable the HDR difference was?

Unless one can actually view a side by side comparison of the two formats the opinions are meaningless, accurate memories of visuals/audio fade very quickly. Comparisons to 2009 are ridiculous imo, there's no way anyone could remember how it looked back then beyond a very simple summary, it looked great or not.

The HDR certainly made things POP way more, especially the greens and the bioluminescent nights. I’m sure it helped the 3D. The variable HFR was used sparingly for A1 but well, I’ll be honest if you’re not actively looking for it (like I was), you prob wouldn’t notice.

Further evidence that no one cares about Avatar (sarcasm). The opening weekend domestic gross might beat the following re-releases combined opening weekends. NWH and Jaws were re-released during Labor Day weekend which included that massive $3 ticket Saturday promo.

Spider-Man NWH $5.4 m finished with $9.265 m

Rogue One $1.1 m finished with $2.6 m

Jaws $2.6 m currently at $5.6 m w/w

E.T. $1.07 m finished with $2.6 w/w

yeah nothing to see here......

Nah, I can understand general audiences being confused about this being a re release or the sequel (specially when the teaser for The Way of Water plays in front of new releases).

I've read several comments on my local theatre's Instagram of people asking if this was the sequel or not.

Well no i can get that part, like double checking if they havent been following movie news, and just saw the teaser in front of another movie.

What i'm talking about is people actually going to the cinema, buying a ticket, without realizing.

That just seems a little strange to me, and i have no sypmapthy really. Atleast the people you mentioned were actully doing a tiny bit of research to make sure.

Variety article on the box office performance of the re-issue.

Variety - Avatar re-release wows with $30.5 million

Despite 13 years passing since “Avatar” first hit theaters, moviegoers are apparently still dazzled by the striking world of Pandora.

In anticipation of the sequel “The Way of Water,” which opens in December, Disney re-released James Cameron’s original, dazzling science-fiction epic to promising results. The film generated $10 million in North America and $20.5 million internationally over the weekend, a huge turnout for movie that opened more than a decade ago, even if that movie happens to be the highest-grossing global release in history. With this weekend’s returns, “Avatar” widens its lead as the biggest movie of all time with $2.85 billion worldwide.

In North America, “Avatar” placed third on box office charts behind newer releases like Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” ($19.2 million) and the Viola Davis-led “The Woman King” ($11 million). In terms of recent re-releases, ticket sales for “Avatar,” which played in 1,980 mostly Imax locations, came in 85% ahead of the re-release for “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The latest Spidey adventure, which returned to theaters months, not years, after its original run, collected $5.4 million from 3,835 theaters over Labor Day weekend.

Overseas, where the first “Avatar” made over 70% of its money, the remastered version took the No. 1 spot in smaller markets like France ($2.9 million), Italy ($1.5 million), Singapore and Thailand. Other top territories were Germany ($1.3 million), the United Kingdom ($1.3 million) and Korea ($1.3 million).

“Had the re-release underperformed,” Dergarabedian said, “that would be the first indicator that — uh oh — there may be a problem [for the sequel.] But this is very encouraging.”

Avatar? Whats that? No one cares about this movie anymore. Everyone has forgotten about that movie, its already 13 years ago when it was released. *sarcasmoff*

I have absolutely no sympathy for them either. The person working at the theater did preemptively say that they would offer refunds to anyone who wanted to leave now but hoped they would stay because of the remaster, which to me just sounds like it had started to become a thing there lol. My guess is these are people who pay no attention to new releases and just showed up to the theater one day, saw Avatar was playing, and assumed it was the new one.

So according to Deadline, the average ticket price of the re-release was $15.5! The actual movie (TWoW) will probably not be as expensive (since the 3D share will presumably be lower) but that's still insane. At that ATP, Avatar 2 could lose a third of its viewers and still earn the same as the original.
