Well, if there's no other way but to let SW and Avatar fight face to face, Disney will of cause push SW as much as they can. I'm just wondering if Disney and Cameron can work out a win-win plan.

Um, Avatar land is a BIG priority for them, given its half a billion dollar price tag and reliance on it to give Animal Kingdom a much needed attendance boost.

I actually think it would be stupid for Disney to not build Star Wars Land first before Avatar Land. SW is obviously way more family friendly.

Star Wars Land is the only way Disney can compete with Unviersal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

At this point, I still don't believe Avatar sequel is coming out 2017.

As someone who lives less then two hours from Orlando, this is completely on point.

Avatar will make a good attraction but already all the advertising here is for Star Wars. And this is long before that attraction opens.

Disney has needed something for a long time to compete with Universal. The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter was a game changer.

They would be very very smart to move as fast as possible with the Star Wars expansion because that will draw people from all over much like Harry Potter did. The only new attraction Disney added was the Snow White mine ride I believe. They always do a lot of advertising for Star Wars weekend though.

Once again, Avatar does not have that crazy fanbase of something like Star Wars, Marvel (which is still at Islands Of Adventure), Harry Potter, etc.. However I do think it's lands will make for a great attraction. But I'm not paying to go to Animal World (or whatever it's called) to experience it.

There is also a lot of speculation about the Frozen ride. I don't hear much about Avatars land.

BTW Avatar 2 does have a date, it's apparently December 25th 2017.

http://www.slashfilm.com/star-wars-episode-8-release-date-change/

"Episode 8‘s December 15, 2017 release date places it directly before Avatar 2, which is scheduled to open on December 25, 2017."

Not sure where they got it from, but there it is.

http://www.vinereport.com/article/avatar.2.news.james.cameron.acknowledges.pressure.to.do.well.in.sequels.of.the.movie/6805.htm

This is from just yesterday, with plenty new quotes from James himself about the movie.

"Avatar 2" will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2017, while its third and fourth sequel will follow in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

If it moves forward as scheduled there is no way FOX doesn't move it. Disney will want IMAX screens for a month again.

Actually, it's a month old. If you read it carefully, you'll see Vine Report's write-up is based on a EW interview with Cameron... back in mid-December.

I just clicked on the EW link before coming back and saw that. Yeah those quotes are originally from December 11th.

So where is everyone getting the 25th release date from? Multiple sites are reporting it as of today.

Maybe everyone borrowed it from Kal's link yesterday.

While I'm predicting 2b+ for Avatar 2, I can't help but entertain the idea that what if, just what if, it is true that no one wants or cars for a sequel and it ends up falling flat on its face. I wonder what the plan for Avatar 3 and 4 would be in that case. It would probably be the funniest thing to ever happen to this forum just watching the meltdowns.

hahaha I guess that is possible. IMDB has it as the 25th now too (not sure how reliable that is though) so maybe from there?

If you search Avatar 2 release date on Google, December 25th 2017 immediately comes up. So he must have influenced a lot of people! lol

Found where they got it from, still it's just a target so I don't know why these sites are treating it as it is:

Speaking with the Montreal Gazette, Avatar director James Cameron confirmed the potential release dates of the trio of sequels and spoke about the how each film relates to each other.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target,” Cameron said. “At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a met-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.”

I didn't mean him specifically, just the newspaper he was linking to. Some NZ periodical, I think.

But that ownt happen, people on these boards are just loud with their theories. If the marketing sucks along with he movie then sure, but I don't see that happening

It will be interesting to watch what happens, that's for sure. But Avatar isn't king of the castle (anymore? ever?), Star Wars is, so Star Wars gets to pick a release date and everything else can deal with it however they choose. Or not, really. It's up to Fox if they want to get blown away by Star Wars. I wouldn't mind that at all, frankly. TFA is already the highest grossing movie ever made domestically, so even if it cost Episode VIII $100M in lost business, it would torpedo Avatar 2 enough to make sure TFA keeps its throne no matter what. In that case, Episodes VIII and IX can be used like cruiser and destroyer escorts to the aircraft carrier that is TFA :P

But none of that will happen. Avatar will screw off to wherever else it can find a release window. December is spoken for.

It won't happen due to IMAX screens. No theater is going to deny Disneys requests even for Avatar.

Where this could be a conflict if these movies really do move forward as scheduled, (say December 2018) is with Episode 9. As of now I believe it has a May release date.

If Episode 8 is a big success again like TFA...expect that to move from May too. And if it does and a sequel to Avatar is there, one of them will have to budge.

Disney has nothing to be worried about as far as release dates go. SW has proven it's the biggest kid on the block by far, and at this point, Avatar would have much more to lose going head to head with SW than SW would going against Avatar, so if Disney does decide that SW becomes a December thing, Fox better find a new place for Avatar.

I doubt Avatar 2 will open next year and so its moot. While 2 big 3d movies can open together but iMax can be with only one movie. So it depends on whether Fox or Disney can negotiate with iMax. I am not sure even Disney would want to compete with Avatar considering how big Avatar is in OS markets. I think disney should know Fox is moving and so picked up the date. Avatar 2 will probably take 2018 date(if its ready by then).

Did I miss something? Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all time. A2 will likely make around 2.5b where Episode 8 will most likely struggle to hit 2b.
