Well Mattel infamously sued the band for damaging the Barbie brand, so yes they absolutely do care about the song

I’m talking about the WB executives who danced to the song.

Also, for the record, Mattel did their own version of the song for a commercial back in 2009, without permission from the band, of course.

Ambient music for one-off events does not need rights holder permission. Especially if the event is not televised or streamed or otherwise made available for public viewing. Cinemacon is, beyond all else, a trade exhibition. And there is no copyright protection for use at trade exhibitions since no one is profiting from its use.

That definently comes under copyright "Fair Usage".

Now if they use it in the actual movie, that is another story, and the lawyers will come a calling.

Barbie is screening on April 30 in SoCal, but only for parents bringing kids aged 9-14.

Considering Eva Mendes said her daughters are a little too young to see it... I didn't think the movie skewed as young as 9-10.

Test screening at Northridge 4/30

Funniest movie I’ve seen since Superbad, non-spoilery reasons as to why:
- Kate McKinnon’s character is everything
- That one Michael Cera scene will be TALKED about
- Zack Snyder joke
- The narrator
- The brutality
- “IT’S THE SUPREME COURT”
- The best possible ending for Barbie, ever
- My favorite F bomb drop possibly ever
- Ryan Gosling for best supporting actor
