Disney Left Worried Angelina Jolie’s New Movie Maleficent Will Flop Because It’s Too Scary?

Reports speculate that retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story will misfire at box office

Yea, but it is not doing Alice's number. More than my estimate of $170M.

It's a success all around

probably has something to do with another WB movie coming out.

Happily impressed by EoT holds on Thurs and Fri. Completely don't buy the insinuations of fudging. Seriously, do you think Warner Brothers has decided to suddenly tweek its numbers by a 100k here or there when 90% of its run is complete? To what end? The more logical conclusion is that tended towarded the older quadrents, has great RT numbers and WOM, and is thus holding well of its own accord. Of course, it's holding well off of an extremely low starting point -- no one is calling it a hit. You're really going to need to show some evidence that its numbers are being played with.

Not too shabby. About as expected. It will be interesting to see if Tammy can get a decent increase today. Seeing as the film burnt off some of the upfront fan push with the early opening.

Fri looking like AOE 10.7-9,Tam 6.4,HTTYD2/ETE 2.8,DUFE/22j 2.5,Malef 2,JB 1.9,TLAM2 1.4,Ame/EOT 1

Pretty low jumps on Friday all around. I'm now looking for a 3.85 weekend multiplier.

41.5M weekend - here we come!

This summer is making me sad as I think more about it.Unless Dawn of the Planet of the Apes breaks out, the maximum any film will gross is ~$270 million. Easily the most underwhelming summer season in modern box office history. You would have to go all the way back to 2001 to find a summer with no $300+ million film. Please Apes, you're our only hope...

I noticed that some commenters were wondering about the performance of a couple of other pics this weekend, namely TWC’s Begin Again and Radius’ Snowpiercer. Okay, so, here we go: Begin Again, which stars Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley started rolling out on 175 screens Wednesday in the top 45 markets after a solid opening last weekend. It had an A- CinemaScore and was 76% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. This film from writer/director John Carney (Once) is expected to take in around $1.38M for the three-day which gives it an excellent per screen of around $8K. It’s a date movie so counter-programming during the summer.

Snowpiercer is the sci-fi, apocalyptic thriller from director Bong Joon-ho and stars Chris Evans in this violent romp. On 250 runs, it should end the 3-day with $1.1M and the five-day with $1.4M for a nice per screen of around $4,520. It’s a bit early but this is how the chart looks now. Will do more calculations as more numbers come in tonight:

So 39-40m weekend. Not bad. Could still reach 250m as long as it doesn't crash next weekend.

250M is locked, even if it does crash next weekend.

TF2 had 2.6 multiplier from its second weekend (when July 4th fell on Saturday). Using this multiplier yields 270+ final total for TF4.

100 mil for Edge of Tomorrow would, if I'm not mistaken, give WB the ability to ask for a lot more for pay TV rights. Which is good! I want Edge to mean something for WB.

Yeah, this summer has been so dull that this is what the conversation has come to.
