That was just an illusion Palpatine was making to try to bait Ezra to pull him through the portal. You can see the sith symbol above the portal and also Palpatine appears in that very portal.

A very bad ending. Loved S1-S3 but no matter how you slice it this just wasn't good. So many different ways this could've ended the only thing I liked was

the Pelleon ref ((which doesn't matter now that Thrawn's dead)) and that they did get rid of Ezra. Everything else was pretty mediocre or bad.

Never actually saw Thrawn die, you know.  I wouldn't quite count him out yet.
