It's only opening in NY/LA on the 9th so 4-5 theaters. It has an expansion on the 16th and will go wide (I'm assuming 700 theaters or so) on Christmas Day with expansions from there.

Judging by my twitters this is already getting the "oh fuck off, this is the frontrunner?" reactions. folks can't even wait 'til the movie is released to backlash that's how excited they are to do it.

spotlight never really got a backlash did it? that just felt like a wave of  "eh sure, I guess that makes sense." i would say the same about 12 years a slave.

Birdman, The Artist, and to a lesser extent, The King's Speech got an awful lot of backlash. Argo was generally liked but had its detractors.

 

It's still a bit of a toss-up this year, but I would say LLL has a narrow lead.
